John awakened slowly, blinking in the sunlight that poured through the window of Jordan's bedroom. It took him a few moments to realize where he was; when he did, a slow smile spread over his face, his thoughts going back over the events of last night.

He and Jordan had gone to bed and devoured each other until the pale dawn had begun to streak the sky. Only then had they fallen asleep, both of them satiated, their bodies still pressed close against each other as though they were reluctant to let go.

Jordan was in front of him now, the firm, rounded curves of his ass pressed against John's crotch as they spooned together. John couldn't stop himself from moving his hand down the other man's side to rest on his bare hip, smiling as he remembered the night before.

He'd made love to Jordan twice more after their rather energetic first coupling, doing as he'd promised Jordan he would and taking his time. He'd gone slowly, savoring the other man, touching, nibbling, kissing, tasting. He was sure that he'd left no area of Jordan's body untouched.

It had been a night that he would always remember with pleasure -- possibly the best night of his life, John told himself as his lips curved into a satisfied smile. And now that it had happened, he couldn't imagine it not being repeated, as often as was possible.

Harold wasn't going to be happy with that decision -- but Harold had no right to dictate to him whether or not he could have a personal life, John thought to himself. He had been too long without someone in his heart -- and after last night, he knew that he'd found the right person.

Jordan was a revelation, a balm to his bruised soul. Their coming together had been everything that John could have wanted -- and more. He knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was already deeply in love with this man, even though he knew that he couldn't say the words aloud.

Would Jordan feel the same about him, over time? Did he already feel that way? John wasn't going to ask; it was far too early in their relationship for those kinds of confidences. At least for him. For the moment, he just wanted to enjoy what they had.

This was only the beginning. They would be together far into the future; he wasn't going to let Jordan go now that he had this man in his life and in his arms. He was going to keep this man by his side; he was going to make this relationship work.

He'd thought that before, and things hadn't worked out then, had they? John closed his eyes against the stab of sudden pain that assailed him, pushing those memories into the back of his mind and slamming a door on them. This time would be different. It had to be.

Nothing and no one was going to take Jordan away from him. He'd lost a love once; this time, he would make sure that the person he loved was safe and protected. He would keep his life with Jordan away from the life he led when he worked with Harold.

That wasn't going to be easy to do, he thought with an inward sigh, but he would make it happen. And if he couldn't -- well, then he would have to tell Jordan about what he did. Maybe he should tell his lover about that anyway -- since he already knew at least part of it.

Jordan had the right to know what the person he was involved with did when they weren't together. And it was always possible that Jordan could help them .... No, John thought firmly, negating that idea even as it came to life. It was too dangerous.

He wasn't going to put Jordan in the middle of the life he led. Jordan would be a part of his life -- but he would be separate from the danger he faced on a daily basis, inviolate, safe from all of that. He would do whatever he had to do for Jordan to stay safe.

After last night, he knew that he had to have Jordan in his life. This man was as necessary to him as breathing was to his lungs; he could no longer let Jordan go now than he could rip out his own heart and hope to survive. He needed this man.

Last night had been a revelation to him, about himself as well as about Jordan. He hadn't thought that he would ever need anyone again, not like this. He'd thought that he had closed off his heart, that no one would ever be able to touch his emotions this strongly again.

Jordan was already a part of him -- a part that he didn't want to let go. Somehow, he would find a way to keep this man close to him, no matter what he had to do. And if that meant telling Jordan about what he and Harold did, then that was what he would do.

Would it be safer to keep Jordan in the dark about most of what they spent their time doing? Probably, he thought with another soft sigh. The less Jordan knew, the safer he would be. If he didn't know anything -- or a least very little -- then he wouldn't be made a target.

That thought made John's blood run cold, a shiver shooting down his spine. If Jordan knew too much about his work, then any enemies that he made could zero in on his boyfriend. And that was something that couldn't be allowed to happen, under any circumstances.

He wasn't going to put Jordan at risk, he told himself firmly. But the best way to avoid that happening was to walk away right now -- to write last night off as a pleasant aberration, say his farewells, and put Jordan out of his life and out of his heart forever.

There was no way he could do that, John realized, closing his eyes and resting his cheek against the softness of Jordan's hair. Jordan was already in his heart; he'd burrowed deep, and John would never push him aside. Not now, not after their lovemaking last night.

Jordan was all that he'd ever wanted; he filled an empty space in John's heart and soul that he hadn't been able to acknowledge was in need of fulfillment. Now that he'd found the person who could make him feel whole again, he wasn't going to let him go that easily.

This man was a revelation in every way -- the way John reacted to his mere presence, the way they seemed to fit together, not only physically, but emotionally as well. Jordan was buried too deeply inside his heart now for him to even consider them not being together.

He would simply have to do everything that he could to keep Jordan safe. Whatever had to be done to achieve that end, he would do it, no matter what it took. There had to be a way to keep Jordan in his life -- and to make him the most important part of that life.

Last night had been everything that he had wanted in his life for so long -- and now that he had found that happiness he craved, he was going to hold on to it with everything he had. Jordan was in his life, in his heart, and in his bed, and John didn't intend to let him go.

All he wanted to do at the moment was to lie here with Jordan in his arms, to make love to him all day, to kiss and touch him until they were both breathless with desire, and then thrust inside him and take them both to the heights of ecstasy.

But he would have to get dressed and leave all too soon -- and Jordan, as well, would have responsibilities that he had to attend to. Neither of them could take more than few stolen hours to be with each other, but maybe that would make their relationship all the sweeter.

He had no idea where this was going, but there was one thing that he did know for sure -- he was going to make this relationship with Jordan work. No matter what it took, he would manage to separate the two disparate sides of his life, to keep the dark from the light.

For now, he didn't want to think about how he was going to do that. He only wanted to lie here with Jordan, to enjoy the time he had with the man he was already falling in love with. There would be little enough time, and he wanted to savor it -- and the man in his arms -- to the fullest.

Tightening his arms around Jordan, John closed his eyes, letting himself sink back into the comfort of sleep. That wouldn't last for much longer, and after the night they'd had together, he wanted to enjoy this time while he could, before he had to face his responsibilities yet again.
