Sometimes he felt that he was living in an alternate universe.

What he did for a living didn't feel like real life a lot of the time, John mused as he stepped out of the shower and wrapped a towel around his waist. It felt .... dreamlike.

Being able to help people was a wonderful feeling; that was why he kept doing what he did. But at the same time, it felt as though he was walking through a dream world, a world where he was a ghost, where he didn't exist, except for the few people who cared about him.

Harold, and Shaw. And even Lionel, even though the crusty cop had a hard time showing his emotions. But he knew that Lionel cared. They all did.

And, of course, then there was Jordan. The center of his life.

If he didn't do what he did, he'd never have met Jordan, and his boyfriend would probably be in prison for the rest of his life, paying for that evil bitch's crimes.

Not being with Jordan .... he didn't even want to think about that. Before the advent of Jordan Hester in his life, he'd been too lonely for far too long. He'd lost too many people who meant too much to him, and he had deliberately locked his heart away.

But he had. He'd taken the chance, and he had been lucky enough to end up with a wonderful man, a man he loved and who he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.

He had never expected to find that, not with the life that he led. He'd given up on love a long time ago; it wasn't something that fit into his life.

Only now, he was trying to make room for that love in his life. It wasn't always easy, but Jordan understood that they couldn't spend all of their time together. He also understood that John was still trying to ease his way into a relationship.

He was lucky to have found a man like Jordan, John told himself as he carefully shaved, then rinsed the lather from his face. Most people wouldn't understand how he lived.

Jordan not only understood, but he accepted John unconditionally.

There was nothing more that he could ask of his lover, John concluded, making his way into the bedroom to get dressed. Jordan was everything that he needed.

If only he could feel as though he had the chance to step through the door of the alternate universe he felt that he often lived in and emerge into the real world, a world where he and Jordan could be together with no darkness surrounding them, no danger lurking in the shadows.

That wasn't possible, John thought with a sigh, sitting down to put on his shoes. But they were making it work, one day at a time. They would continue to do so.

Because he wasn't giving up this love he'd found, no matter what happened.
