"Do you really think that man in the bar wanted to whisk me away to some sleazy motel somewhere and proceed to have his way with me?" Jamie asked the Doctor, pillowing his head on the Time Lord's shoulder. "I'm not so sure that he actually wanted me."

"Jamie, I saw him put his hand on your thigh," the Doctor told him, frowning and shaking his head. "If that doesn't mean that he wants you in a physical way, I don't know what does. People don't make that sort of gesture unless they want something."

Jamie thought about those words for a few moments, then nodded slowly. "I suppose you're right. After all, I look just like you, so I know that I'm attractive. Though if he'd had the chance, I think he would have gone for you in a heartbeat and not known I was there."

"You sell yourself short, love," the Doctor said softly, raising a hand to stroke his fingers through Jamie's hair. "You're just as desirable as I am. Maybe even more so, because you have a kind of vulnerability about you that I lost long ago. That's very attractive to most people."

"Does that attract you?" Jamie asked, shifting his position slightly to look up at his lover inquiringly. "Is that one of the reasons why you fell in love with me? Because you thought I was vulnerable and needed you? Or was that something you didn't realise until later?"

"I fell in love with you because you're .... you," the Doctor told him, smiling at his lover affectionately and ruffling his hair. "There were so many factors that made me lose my hearts to you that I couldn't begin to put them all into words, Jamie."

"There are so many people in the world who seem happy to share their lovers," Jamie said thoughtfully, his mind still on the scene that had narrowly been avoided in the bar they'd left recently. "But you'd never do that, would you? You're a one-man man."

The Doctor nodded vigorously, making Jamie smile inwardly. He'd known the answer when he had asked the question; he just wanted to hear the Doctor say the words. He wanted to know out loud that his lover would never share him, or let anyone else so much as touch him.

"I'd never share you with anyone, Jamie," the Doctor said, his voice soft and husky. "Do you really think that I'd stand for anyone else touching the man I love? Even though ...." His words trailed off, and Jamie knew what he was thinking about.

He hadn't been able to prevent Jamie being kidnapped and raped by John Hart. It seemed like ages ago that it had happened, though it had in actuality only been a few months. Jamie still shuddered at the memory; it was one that he didn't care fo hold in his mind.

"What happened to me with Hart wasn't sharing -- it was taking," he said softly, wanting to assuage any guilt that the Doctor might be feeling. The last thing Jamie wanted was to bring back that painful time for either of them, to let it intrude into their present happiness.

"I know it wasn't," the Doctor said with a sigh. "I just wish that there had been some way I could have stopped what happened. But now I know to be more vigilant with you -- though I should have known it right from the start. I have too many enemies who would use you against me."

Jamie nodded, sobering at the thought. There were far too many people who would want to get to the Doctor through him; it was no wonder that the Time Lord seemed to be overprotective of him wherever they went. "What he did wasn't your fault, Doctor. You know that."

The Doctor sighed, stroking his fingers through Jamie's hair again. "I know, love. I keep telling myself that -- but there's a part of me that feels I should have been able to protect you from anything that could possibly happen. And I'll always feel guilty that I didn't."

"Well, not sharing me with anyone is a good start," Jamie told him, trying to infuse his voice with a playful tone. "And it's not like I want to be shared. I'm a one-man man, too -- and for me, the one man is you. No one else could even come close."

"I'll never share you. Not in any way," the Doctor told him, his arms sliding around Jamie's waist to pull the other man close against him. Jamie closed his eyes, resting his head on the Time Lord's chest, hearing the beat of those dual hearts and reveling in the love that surrounded him.
