There was something about the silence around them that didn't feel right.

Jamie didn't know why the short hairs on the back of his neck were standing up; he didn't know why he felt that the silence was ominous, heavy, even threatening.

But that was how it felt, and he had learned not to discount those sorts of feelings. He might not have some kind of magical sixth sense, but he knew when something was amiss -- and it definitely was here. The atmosphere didn't feel right; it was charged with tension.

He knew that the Doctor could feel it, too, just by looking at the other man. The Time Lord's jaw was clenched tightly, a sure sign that he was tense.

The Master was here. He had to be.

Jamie was sure of it. That was the only explanation for the empty streets, the eerie silence that fell all around them. He had been here, and was probably still here.

Had this been a trap for the two of them, set by the Master? Was their nemesis just waiting for them to walk directly into the trap, to make one false move and ensnare themselves? Had they been too quick to come here, thinking that this was a place untouched by the Master's evil?

Well, they were here now, and they were already a good distance from the Tardis. Even if they turned and ran back, they might not make it to safety in time.

In time for what? Jamie asked himself. Would the Master try to attack them in broad daylight, where he could be seen by anyone who might happen to be looking?

Of course he would, Jamie thought grimly, looking around. There were no people on the streets that he could see; everyone appeared to be hidden safely behind locked doors. He didn't even see any faces watching them surreptitiously from behind closed curtains.

Yet there were people here. He could sense their presence; they were just being silent out of self-preservation. Which was only more proof that the Master was here.

Just as thought crossed his mind, chaos broke out.

Four men appeared from the alley directly ahead of the Doctor, grabbing his arms, one of them holding a gun to the Time Lord's head -- though none of them approached Jamie.

"Run, Jamie!" the Doctor shouted, and though every nerve in Jamie's body screamed in protest, he did as he was told. He turned and began to run as fast as he could move, back towards the Tardis and safety -- though all he wanted to do was free the Doctor from the clutches of those men.

It was obvious that the Master was here. The silence had only been the calm before the storm that had now broken over their heads, and was raining down upon them.

Jamie had no idea how to bring that storm to an end.
