Jamie sighed as he quietly folded his hands in his lap, looking around surreptitiously at the people in the restaurant that the Doctor had brought him to. There were all kinds of species here, but he was fairly sure that he was the only human.

Tonight was a special night; it was the anniversary of the day that the Doctor had spirited him away from that beach, removing him from a destiny that everyone else seemed to believe he would be forced to accept, a life that would have been hell for him.

He couldn't imagine more of a living death than spending his short human life span with someone he didn't love; that life would have been wasted on someone who didn't love him and only wanted him to satisfy their own selfishness, because of the way he looked.

The Doctor had taken him away from all that; the Time Lord had made the decision for them to be with each other, and Jamie had never regretted a day of that togetherness. He knew that he would never be happy anywhere but with the Doctor.

The Time Lord had excused himself to run to the mens' room; he had only been gone for a few minutes, but Jamie was already starting to feel slightly uncomfortable. Would he ever learn to be at ease around people that he didn't know?

He didn't think that would ever be possible for him. He always felt as though people knew what he was -- a unique creature that had never existed before, a Time Lord's mind in a human body. He was always sure that he was being looked at and discussed.

That was ridiculous, of course. He wasn't any more the center of attention in this somewhat crowded restaurant than anyone else would be. It was the Doctor who seemed to draw attention and stares -- or maybe that had only been because they looked exactly alike.

People had stared at them when they came in; Jamie had felt horribly self-conscious, as though he wanted to turn and walk back out of the door, or make his way to a quiet corner and hide. But he hadn't done either of those things; he'd simply followed the Doctor.

Tonight was meant to be a celebration of their time together; it didn't seem as though he had been living on the Tardis for as long as he had, Jamie thought, propping his chin in his hands. Sometimes it seemed like such a short time since he'd come into being.

Had it really been a year? Had he really been with the Doctor for that long? Time really wasn't of much importance to the Doctor; he was, after all, a Time Lord. He had all the time in the world -- but that was time that Jamie, being human, didn't have at his disposal.

Still, he wasn't gong to think about that tonight. He was going to enjoy this night out with the Doctor and be happy that he was here, with the man he loved, rather than being trapped in an alternate universe with someone he could never love in any way.

Tonight was meant to be for the two of them, for their happiness, for them to think about their future. It wasn't going to be a night of bad memories, or events from the past that neither one of them wanted to think of. Those things would be pushed far, far away.

He would smile and laugh and have a good time tonight; he would look across the table into the Doctor's eyes and know that this was where he belonged. He would be happy for the chance to be out with the man he loved; he would let the Doctor show him off, and vice versa.

And he would revel in the fact that he was loved and cherished -- not only for tonight, but for all of his life. There weren't a lot of people in the universe as lucky as he was; there were some who never fulfilled their destiny, who never found their other half.

Tonight, he would push aside the dark cloud that had seemed to be hovering him lately, like some heavy premonition of a disaster that would overtake them, one that couldn't be avoided. Tonight, they would throw away their cares and be completely happy.

Jamie smiled as he saw the Doctor making his way back across the restaurant, his gaze caught and held by the sight of his lover. Yes, tonight was for them -- and there was a part of him that wished tonight would last forever, with no end in sight.
