Los Angeles, 1988

Josef took a deep breath, looking at himself critically in the mirror. He didn't usually take this much care in making sure that he looked flawless, but tonight was a special occasion. Tonight was the first time he'd seen Mick since Coraline's death.

He was prepared to comfort the other man -- to a point. He knew that it was always hard to give up a person you loved, but he had always been convinced that Mick had never truly been in love with Coraline. He'd been obsessed with her; there was a huge difference.

He was sure that part of Mick had been in love. But that love had been buried under the landslide of obsessive feelings Mick had harbored for the woman -- and Coraline, being the attention-hungry bitch that she was, had encouraged the obsession.

She herself had been obsessed with Mick in a way that Josef knew had nothing to do with love, and had everything to do with the fact that she wanted to be the center of someone's life. And Mick had been swept into her trap without realizing that he was caught.

Or had he been caught willingly, knowing that he was nothing more to her than a lamb to the slaughter and yet giving himself up to that fate? Even if he hadn't known that she was a vampire at first, he'd never left her, over all those tumultuous years.

But now she was gone, Josef told himself with a smile. Yes, he'd been her friend, in some ways, but Coraline had become more and more unhinged as the years had gone by. And her last desperate attempt to keep Mick's affections had gone way too far.

Trying to force Mick to be a father had been a dumb move if ever there was one, he thought with a snort of contempt. She should have known that it would never work, but she'd sensed that her hold on Mick was failing, and she was looking for any way to keep him with her.

Well, she'd failed. And now .... Josef took a deep breath, glancing into the mirror again and running a hand through his hair. Now, it was time for the saga of Mick and Josef to begin. The story of Mick and Coraline had ended badly. It was time for a new tale.

When he'd first met Mick, he'd had a penchant for listening to Noel Coward songs. And there had been one that had always caught his ear more than the others, a song that he'd hummed along with but had never thought would pertain to him and his own life.

"Someday I'll find you, moonlight behind you ...." He was humming the song now, the memory of when he had first met Mick bringing a smile to his face. That song had been playing the first time he'd seen Mick; he should have known it would be prophetic.

He hadn't really been searching for a lover at the time; he'd had Sarah, even though she was in a coma by that point. He'd sworn to himself that he would never fall for anyone in that way again, that any relationship he had would be strictly for fun. He would never lose his heart again.

But that attitude had quickly changed the first time he'd looked at Mick. He had felt his heart turn over in his chest; he hadn't wanted to admit that he could fall in love with a man, and at first he'd denied it to himself, refusing to believe that it was possible.

Over the years, he'd pretended that he felt nothing for Mick other than a close friendship. He'd been the other man's friend, and later, something of a mentor after Coraline had turned him against his will. And all that time, the two of them had grown closer.

Josef had long since given up denying to himself that he wanted Mick. It had come as a surprise to him that he could feel such an intense desire for another man, given the events that had happened on his last night as a human. But he accepted that desire, even reveled in it.

Now, it was time for something to begin between them. Mick might have his doubts, but Josef was almost positive that the other man had feelings for him as well. There had been too many meaningful glances, too many subtle double entendres.

Even if they didn't acknowledge any feelings tonight, it would still be a beginning, Josef thought, smiling at his reflection. Mick might not be ready for that yet -- in fact, Josef was sure that he wasn't. But it could be a start, a way to let Mick know he was here.

He'd always been there for the other man, even before Coraline had turned him and there had been such an upheaval in Mick's life. He would gladly have done anything that Mick asked him -- especially if it was something that would bring them closer together.

It had been hard for him to admit to himself that he might be falling for Mick, Josef thought as he went down the stairs from his bedroom and entered the living room. But now that he'd been able to make that admission, he was ready to take things a step further.

Whatever Mick felt for him, he was fairly sure that it went beyond friendship. The two of them had become close over the years; Mick had even confided to him that he was losing his feelings for Coraline, and that he didn't know if he wanted to stay with her.

Josef had known all too well that she would never let Mick go; he hadn't been all that surprised when she had kidnapped a human child and threatened to turn it, in a desperate, last-ditch attempt to keep Mick chained to her side.

Fortunately, it hadn't worked -- Mick had rescued the child and started the fire that had burnt Coraline to a crisp. Hopefully, that was the last of her involvement in their lives, and Mick could begin to heal from the harm she'd caused his psyche.

It would take a while for Mick to be completely free of her. Josef freely acknowledged that; he himself had taken a very long time to be free of Sarah, and she had been someone he'd truly loved. Even now, he still harbored feelings for her, against his better judgment.

But Mick had a lot more to overcome, he thought with a sigh. Mick had been with Coraline for much longer; their relationship had been something like playing croquet with live bombs. It was exciting, but sooner or later, something was going to explode in their faces.

That relationship had been so incredibly volatile that Josef was almost positive Mick would be glad of the opportunity to be with someone who wasn't so, well, crazy. He smiled wryly at the thought; he wasn't exactly someone who could be described as warm and fuzzy.

Still, he was a better choice than Coraline -- especially if Mick wanted to have a long shelf life. He'd put himself at risk simply by spending over thirty years with someone like her; he would have never known when she might decide to turn against him.

At least if he chose to be with Josef, he would have someone by his side who would be loyal, someone who would never let him down. Josef closed his eyes, finally daring to let himself dream of what a future spent with Mick could possibly be like.

The two of them were two of a kind, even though they both had far different ways of looking at their lives. Mick definitely wasn't enamored of what he was, and Josef chose to embrace his existence as a vampire, reveling in it and loving every second.

They were an odd couple, Josef had to admit that. A vampire who didn't want to be what he was, and another vampire who embraced every moment of his existence. But somehow, they had become friends -- and Josef wanted them to be much more.

Tonight would be the beginning of that, he promised himself, even if there were no overt moves made, no words said that would lead to anything physical happening between them. But he could plant the thought in Mick's mind, and then made sure that it grew.

He'd known when he first met Mick that this man was the one for him, even though at the time he hadn't wanted to admit that. He'd accepted his feelings over time, and now, he knew that he wanted to act on those emotions, that he couldn't deny them any longer.

Something was bound to begin between them tonight, Josef thought as he heard the doorbell ring and sensed Mick waiting outside. As he moved towards the door, he allowed himself to smile with satisfaction. This was the first night of the rest of their lives -- lives that he wanted them to spend together.
