What was he doing here?

He shouldn't be standing in his apartment alone, looking out at the bright lights of the city and wondering where Josef was and what he was doing. But yet, Mick couldn't bring himself to put on his coat and leave his place to go over to Josef's penthouse.

It was nearly midnight; it was too late to go over there. Josef had a big meeting in the morning with two of his company's biggest investors; it would be good to let him get some sleep tonight, so that he'd be refreshed for his meeting and feel rested.

But it was so hard to stay away from his boyfriend, Mick told himself, clasping his hands behind his back and starting to pace around his living room. He wanted to be with Josef tonight more than he could put into words. He was getting far too used to them spending every night together.

Usually, he was curled up in bed with Josef around this time; either they'd already made love at least once, or they would make love sometime during the night. He had gotten into a routine, become used to falling asleep with his lover in his arms.

Was Josef used to that, too? Was he even now pacing around his bedroom, wishing that Mick was there, not caring that he had an early wake-up call and wanting nothing more than for the two of them to be together, their bodies and souls entwined?

Mick sighed, closing his eyes and resting his forehead against the coolness of the windowpane. He didn't need to go over to Josef's place. His lover was probably already ensconced in a freezer for the night, getting the rest he needed.

He should be doing that, too, but he still felt too restless to go to sleep. He knew that he needed to be with Josef to calm his nerves, for the heat that surged through his body to be tamed. And he'd told himself that he would let Josef have a night to himself.

Maybe calling his boyfriend was an option. If Josef wasn't asleep, he might want Mick to come over. He reached for his cell phone before slowly shaking his head, his hand dropping to his side, leaving the phone sitting where it was on the table near the window.

That was a bad idea. One that he wasn't going to follow through on.

No. He wasn't going to call Josef. He would be moving in with his boyfriend soon enough; they'd be in the same apartment every night, even if they didn't always fall asleep in each other's arms. They couldn't, not given the fact that they had to spend some time in a deep freeze.

He wouldn't have many more nights to be away from Josef. Less than two weeks now before his lease ran out, and he'd made arrangements to move out the weekend before. He would be gone three days before the end of the lease, living with the man he loved.

It was a big step for them to take. In all of his years as a vampire, Josef had never lived with anyone; he'd always kept to himself, never giving his heart to anyone enough to trust them with his personal space. Even Sarah hadn't gained that privilege.

Mick was the first person he'd ever asked to share his life in that way. The only person Mick had ever shared his own life with was Coraline, and that had turned out to be the worst mistake of his life. But this was going to be very different.

His relationship with Josef was nothing like the stormy obsession he'd had with Coraline. The two of them had gotten to know each other as friends first -- and that had changed the tenor of their relationship into something deep and enduring.

This wasn't the kind of relationship where two people threw themselves at each other head first without knowing what awaited them. He and Josef knew each other from the inside out, sure of their emotions, secure in their love for each other as they'd never been with anyone else.

Josef was nothing like his ex-wife. Josef truly loved him; this man wasn't obsessed with him, didn't want to wield power and control over everything he did. Josef didn't want to use him. Josef only wanted them to be together, to give their hearts and souls to each other.

This would be nothing like his disastrous marriage. He and Josef had no secrets from each other; there had been nothing but secrets between himself and Coraline. There had been passion, yes, but it wasn't a healthy, loving kind of sensual passion.

Theirs had been a passion that was frightening in its intensity, dark and dangerous. It hadn't been a feeling that he was proud of once he'd discovered what Coraline was really like; he'd wanted to distance himself from her, but he hadn't been able to.

Once he finally had, he'd tried to wrap a protective shield around himself; he'd let Josef get behind that protection, but only as a friend. He'd deliberately closed his eyes to Josef's feelings for him -- and more importantly, to his own feelings for the other man.

He'd had far too many nights away from Josef. And in less than two weeks, he wouldn't have to deal with them any more. But until that time came, spending this midnight hour away from the man he loved was one of the hardest things he'd ever made himself do.

Mick stared out of the window at the full moon that seemed to hang motionless in the sky, almost as if it was watching him and wondering what he would do. Was it his imagination, or was it somehow goading him on, telling him to throw caution to the winds?

If it was, then he was going to listen to it.

He grabbed his keys from the coffee table, picking up his coat from where he'd tossed it over the back of the couch and shrugging his way into it. To hell with the lateness of the hour. He wanted to see Josef tonight -- and that was exactly what he was going to do.

He'd spent too many nights away from the man he loved in the past, nights when they'd wanted each other without realizing it, nights that had been wasted when they could have been together. He wasn't going to waste another one.

He needed Josef. Even if the other man insisted that he needed to sleep in the deep freeze for at least part of the night, he would be there in the apartment with Josef. He would be near his boyfriend; he could revel in Josef's presence, his very nearness.

There was no reason for him to spend another midnight without Josef. Even though it might not be the best time for going to see his boyfriend, he was going to. And with his vampiric speed, he could get there in just a few minutes. There would be no long walk across the city.

In less than five minutes, he was at the door of Josef's building; the doorman there knew him, and he was ushered into the lobby within seconds. Mick stepped into the elevator that would take him up to Josef's apartment, his heart beating rapidly in his chest.

What would Josef think about him coming over unannounced, so late at night? Would he assume that there was some kind of emergency, and then be annoyed when there wasn't? Or would he welcome Mick with open arms and be glad that he was here?

Of course Josef would be happy to see him, he told himself firmly s he stepped out of the elevator and made his way down the hall to the front door of the penthouse. There was no reason why he wouldn't be. It was a little late, but so what? They were vampires. They were used to darkness.

Before he could raise a hand to knock at the door, it swung open, and Josef was standing there with that insouciant grin on his face, that crooked smile that Mick had grown to love so much. Wordlessly, he held out a hand; Mick ignored that, pulling his lover into his arms.

"I couldn't spend another midnight without you," he whispered just before their lips met.
