"I've always loved Hallowe'en. It's my favorite holiday of the year," Josef said as Mick looked around the living room of his penthouse. "It's the one night when monsters like myself can feel perfectly at home in the world. I don't even have to hide the fangs."

"You know you always feel right at home, no matter where you are," Mick scoffed, though he knew in his heart that the statement wasn't true. Josef never seemed to be quite comfortable with humans -- he'd been betrayed by too many of them in the past.

Josef shrugged, gesturing around him at the Hallowe'en touches he'd added to the room. Mick was surprised that Josef had dressed the place up for a holiday -- he didn't seem like the kind of man who would have that sort of a sentimental streak.

But he was finding out little tidbits of information about his lover every day. Josef never failed to surprise him when he least expected it; that was one of the things Mick loved about him. He was unpredictable, though not always in a good way.

Still, he couldn't stop loving Josef if he tried. This man had been his mentor for years, his guide into the vampiric world he'd inhabited for over half a century now. If not for Josef, he would probably have been dead long ago. He owed Josef his life many times over.

Of course, he'd saved Josef's life, as well. As they'd grown closer, he'd slowly realized that he was losing his heart -- and now, he never wanted to take it back. He belonged with Josef, and there was nowhere else that he wanted to be. Ever.

"So what's your choice tonight, Mick? A trick -- or a treat?" Mick was roused out of his private thoughts by the sound of Josef's voice, the teasing, almost sarcastic tone. His boyfriend could always tell when he was drifting off into his own little world.

"Well, since I'm not all that fond of having tricks played on me, that answer would be obvious, wouldn't it?" he replied with a smile. He wondered what Josef was up to; there was a gleam in those beautiful dark eyes that told him there was some mischief afoot.

He almost winced at the sight of the carved pumpkins around the room, complete with candles lighting them from the inside and making the garish grins seem almost malevolent. Did Josef actually like those things? It didn't seem like his idea of comfortable décor.

"How about both a trick and a treat together?" Josef asked him, tilting his head to the side. It was only then that Mick noticed how his boyfriend was dressed; he hadn't really paid attention to that fact when he'd first entered the penthouse.

Why in the world was Josef wearing a long black cape? Had he been out wandering around the streets with all of the kids who were out trick or treating in their costumes? He would fit right in -- and no one would know that he was the real thing.

Mick squinted across the room at his boyfriend, a slight frown marring his brow. Was it only his active imagination, or were Josef's bare toes barely visible under the hem of that robe? Why in the world was he barefoot, yet still wearing a Hallowwe'en costume?

He shrugged nonchalantly, wondering what kind of a trick the other man had in mind. Josef's mind worked in devious ways; he'd discovered that long ago. But he also knew that his boyfriend wasn't malicious; he wasn't going to do anything to hurt someone he cared for.

"Okay, I can go for that. As long as the trick part isn't too bad," he said, keeping his tone light. He didn't know just what his lover had planned, but whatever it was, he knew that if he wanted to back away from it, Josef wouldn't force the issue.

"You've already seen the trick," Josef said, his voice deceptively soft. "You didn't expect to see me all dressed up like a vampire, did you? But the best way to conceal what you are is to hide in plain sight. You of all people should know that, Mick."

Mick nodded, knowing exactly what Josef meant by that. He'd long since discovered that keeping himself visible to humans and acting as though he was still one of them was the best way for him to hide. Only a very few people actually knew what he truly was.

"So what's the treat?" Mick asked with a laugh. "Are we going out on the one night of the year that we can be what we really are openly? We won't even have to hide the fangs. People will think they're fake, so it's perfectly safe for us to let it all hang out."

"I intend to let it all hang out -- in a different kind of way." With those words, Josef stood up and spread his arms, opening the black cape. The silken fabric swirled around him like a black cloud; Mick's dark eyes widened in surprise as he took in the sight.

Josef was completely naked under the heavy black silk cape, his slender, pale body a marked contrast to the midnight fabric. Mick couldn't take his eyes from that body; if this was his treat, then he could stand here and look at it all evening.

"Well?" Josef asked, tilting his head to the side and placing a hand on his hip. "You said you wanted the trick and the treat. You've seen them both -- now it's up to you to decide if you want to take full advantage of the treat or not. It's up to you."

Mick moved across the room to take his boyfriend into his arms, his mouth capturing Josef's in a heady, steamy kiss that took his breath away. After a few moments, he lifted his head to come up for air -- and found himself staring right at one of the carved pumpkins.

A shudder went down his spine at the sight; it was creepy. It made him feel as though they were being watched, and that was a kink that he wasn't into. Voyeurism had never been his thing, especially when he was making love to Josef.

"Can we move into the bedroom?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper. "I have a few tricks that I just might like to play on you -- but I don't like the audience." He indicated the pumpkins, one of which seemed to be almost leering at them.

Josef didn't answer; he merely moved out of Mick's arms, across the room to where the pumpkins sat. One by one, he blew out the flames that danced within the carved interiors, plunging the room into a deep, velvet darkness.

Mick's vampire sight adjusted to the darkness quickly; he could see that Josef was holding out his arms, an expectant look on his face. Moving across the room to his lover, Mick bent to hook one arm behind Josef's knees and lifted the slender man into his arms.

Josef's arms went around his neck as Mick carried him into the bedroom without bothering to remove the cape. He intended to make the most of his treat -- and he certainly did have some tricks up his sleeve that Josef would discover before the night was over.
