Sam tries to keeps his distance from Jake, wary of the indiscernible emotion in the other man’s eyes since they left Cold Oak. But there isn’t enough space between them, Sam knows, and reasons that it’s only because they’re cramped in the cab of an abandoned pickup.

He can still hear the resounding crack, remember the surprise on Ava’s face and wonders if he would be alive if Jake wasn’t there.

But it’s too cold outside to worry about anything except finding Dean, too dark outside to look, and Jake’s snoring is too loud for Sam to get any sleep.
