Jack winced as Owen finished stitching the gash on his shoulder. The weevil they'd been chasing had got a lucky strike in; slashing the Captain open right across the collarbone, but was now safely confined to a cell in the depths of the Hub.

"All done." Owen said as he injected antibiotics into the wound.

"Thanks...now you can all head off home." Jack replied raising his voice so the rest of the team could hear.

Owen grabbed his leather jacket & took the stairs two at a time to join in the chorus of "Night Jack" with Tosh & Gwen as they appeared briefly in the entrance to the medical bay on their way out. Jack gave a small wave to see them off and surveyed the pile of torn & bloody clothes next to him on the autopsy table.

Hearing footsteps on the stairs Jack looked up as Ianto approached.

"Brought you a clean shirt."

Jack smiled.

"You read my mind."

Taking the shirt Jack quickly realised he was going to have trouble getting it on with his injury, but Ianto was already one-step ahead.

"Let me..." he said softly & helped the older man dress.

"Some first date, huh? I'm sorry our evening got ruined."
Jack offered apologetically as Ianto's fingers brushed against his chest.

"Doesn't matter. Another time maybe?"

Tilting his head to one side Jack looked at the young Welshman in front of him. He'd had a lot of time to think during the year that never was, time to decide what he really wanted — more than an occasional fumble afterhours, more than a stolen kiss or slap on the arse when the others weren't looking. There was nothing he'd like more than to taste Ianto's perfect mouth, run his fingers through his hair & pin him up against the wall, but he also wanted to do this right. He wanted dinner, movies, walks in the country, nights in cuddled up on the sofa — oh God; he'd got it bad...Captain Jack Harkness wanted a proper boyfriend.

"What do you say to fish n' chips by the Bay?" he asked with a mischievous grin.

"What? Now?!"

"Why not? You don't have to rush off home do you?"

A small smile spread across Ianto's face as he considered the proposal.

"No, I don't and now I think about it I'm starving!"

Jack slipped off the autopsy table with a flourish & they both headed upstairs to gather their coats.

The abrupt jolt of the lift as it clunked into action caught Ianto off balance so he suddenly found a strong hand on his hip to steady him. With butterflies in his stomach he reached down to place his hand over Jack's and was rewarded by a quick squeeze & a dazzling smile from the Captain.

Once they emerged into the Plas, they both paused, still hidden by the perception filter. Jack leant in close & whispered in Ianto's ear.

"I want to do this right Yan. First date - I'm paying."

Taking the younger man's hand Jack moved off across the Plas towards the smell of chips & vinegar.

Walking along the waterfront Jack found an empty bench & sat down patting the space next to him before digging into his newspaper package.

"Hmmm...there's nothing like fish n' chips in newspaper." he sighed between mouthfuls.

"Must be the only place left that still serves them this way." Ianto said as he sat down.

The Captain gave a nervous laugh & dropped his eyes to his dinner, suddenly feeling rather vulnerable under Ianto's steady gaze.

"It's not quite dinner and a movie, but I can stretch to a spectacular view..."

Ianto looked out over the Bay. The water was still and dark reflecting the moonlight & twinkling coloured lights of the city. It was beautiful. He turned to the handsome man sitting next to him & reached out to lift Jack's chin so he could look him in the eyes.

"It's perfect Jack. Thank you."

Leaning forward to close the gap between them, Ianto captured Jack's mouth in a tender kiss. Moaning slightly the older man parted his lips; inviting Ianto's tongue to explore. After a moment, the Welshman pulled back leaving Jack wanting more.

"Kissing on a first date Mr Jones?!" Jack quipped breathlessly, eyes sparkling in the moonlight.

Ianto smiled broadly, popped a couple of chips into his mouth & licked his lips salaciously.

"Plenty more where that came from."

Jack felt his stomach clench with desire at the sight of Ianto's tongue caressing his lips & couldn't help wondering how he'd gotten so lucky.

They finished their meal in companionable silence. Jack tried not to let it show on his face, but the painkillers were starting to wear off & his shoulder had begun to throb.

"You ok Cariad?" Ianto asked concern furrowing his brow.

"Just a twinge." Jack lied.

Shaking his head knowingly the younger man got up & held his hand out to Jack.

"Come on — I'll walk you home Captain."

Jack laughed, took Ianto's hand & let himself be led back to the water tower.

When they reached the stone slab lift Jack pulled Ianto into a one armed hug; savouring the feeling of the other man's body against his own.

"So, can we do this again sometime?" he asked.

"That..." Ianto replied punctuating his words with a kiss, "would be lovely."

"Now, go rest that shoulder Cariad."

"Is that an order?" Jack asked with a raised eyebrow.

"It is...now go!"

Jack gave Ianto one last squeeze & slapped his bum as he turned to leave.

"Goodnight Jack." Ianto said with a chuckle over his shoulder.

Jack stood & watched the young Welshman disappear into the night, then pressed the button on his wrist computer & descended into the depths of the Hub with a huge grin plastered across his face.
