The careful, quiet rituals had been observed. None of them spoke as ruined clothing was gently stripped from cold, still flesh, too caught in guilt and grief to beg forgiveness from each other or the dead, every action extending into painful, fruitless vigil. It took three days to get him as far as the morgue.

Laid out on the chill metal tray, Jack looked strangely peaceful. It would be the work of moments to close the zip, close the drawer, to lay him to rest once and for all....

Not one of them could quite bring themselves to do it.
