Greg sighed as he curled up in bed, wishing that he wasn't alone.

He understood that Spencer had to work. And they had, after all, had Christmas together. But it still sucked that he had to be alone on New Year's Eve.

He hated knowing that Spencer was halfway across the country, in Chicago, working on a case there. He'd thought that they would be able to bring in the new year together.

So much had happened to them in the past year, so much that had changed them both irrevocably. Greg finally felt as though he was beginning to recover from his ordeal with Foyet, and having Spencer by his side for much of the time had gone a long way to exacerbating that recovery.

He'd actually felt good about this holiday, until a call had come in from Spencer's boss, saying that they were needed on a case in Chicago and he had to get ready.

Greg hadn't pouted; he hadn't told Spencer that he didn't want him to go. This was, after all, his boyfriend's job; he had no right to hold Spencer back from it.

That didn't stop him from hating the fact that he'd ring in the new year by himself.

Greg sighed as he turned over, punching his pillow. He always had trouble sleeping the first few days that Spencer was gone on a case, and this was no exception.

It had been three days now, and he had no hope of his boyfriend being back before tomorrow. He was sure that he and Spencer would call each other, and probably be on the phone when the new year arrived, so at least they'd be together in some small way. It was better than nothing.

But still, it would be better to have Spencer here with him, cuddling on the couch as they watched the ball come down in Times Square and sharing a loving kiss at midnight.

How long had he been trying to fall asleep now? Greg almost groaned as he looked over the clock. He'd gone to bed at midnight, and it was now two in the morning.

He'd had the night off from work, and he didn't have to work on New Year's Eve, either. He'd been told that he wouldn't be called in, since he'd been putting in some overtime lately, even when Spencer had been here with him. So he had the comfort of knowing that he had some guaranteed time off.

But at the moment, he'd rather be working, he told himself wryly. At least if he had a new case to concentrate on, it would take his mind off of missing his boyfriend.

He shouldn't miss Spencer this much. He hadn't always been this needy.

Greg sighed as he sat up in bed, running a hand through his hair. Well, needy or not, he did miss Spencer. He missed him terribly. And he wanted his boyfriend here.

He might as well get up and make a pot of tea, and settle down on the couch with a good book, he told himself as he swung his long legs out of bed. He wouldn't get any sleep, he was sure of that.

He frowned when he heard the knock on the door; it was a good thing that he'd decided to put on sweatpants as he got up, rather than having to go to the door in his boxers and a t-shirt. Who in the world would be here this late at night? He froze suddenly, warning sirens going of in his mind.

Could this be Foyet? Could he somehow know that Spencer wasn't here, and that Greg would be unprotected? A shiver went through him, and he reached for his gun as he approached the door.

When Greg put his eye to the peephole in the middle of the door, he almost choked on his own breath. For a moment, he couldn't move; then, he was throwing the door wide.

Spencer stood there, a smile on his face as he hefted an overnight bag.

"What are you doing here?" Greg managed to say, forcing himself not to fall into Spencer's arms. He managed to wait until his boyfriend was inside before wrapping his arms around him in a tight hug.

"We solved the case, and everybody told me to take the first flight I could get back here to you," Spencer said softly, a smile curving his lips. "They knew how much I was missing you."

So he wasn't going to have a lonely new year, after all! Greg could hardly contain his happiness; he wanted to jump around the room and clap his hands like a child. But he refrained from doing so; he wasn't going to make Spencer think that he had been depressed only a few moments ago.

Instead, he simply held on to his boyfriend, not wanting to let him go. Spencer was holding him just as tightly, he realized after a moment. He had obviously missed Greg, too.

The two of them stood there, holding each other, for what seemed to Greg like a very long time. Then, he drew back a little, just slightly, and Spencer's lips were on his.

As he sank into the kiss, Greg knew that it was going to be a very good new year indeed.
