There's a box shoved toward the back of a high shelf, and Derek closes his eyes against the shower of dust that rains down on him as he pulls it down. He rummages through the contents with one hand, the other supporting the bottom of the brittle, water-stained cardboard. When he's sure he hasn't missed some hidden treasure he sets it back up on the shelf, ducking his head to avoid fresh swirls of dust catching the afternoon sun.

He's surprised his cell phone hasn't rung; it's been awhile since they got through an entire weekend without an emergency call, but it's already Sunday and so far no one's been kidnapped or murdered. Then again, it's the first really nice weekend of the season, and even serial killers probably enjoy the spring weather now and again.

Derek shakes his head at the thought and glances down the aisle, making sure he hasn't missed any hidden treasures. He's about to give up on the place altogether when Spencer appears at his side, a box in one hand and an antique knob in the other. "What do you think of these?"

"Nice," Derek says, taking the piece of hardware and holding it up to the light. "How many?"

"At least a dozen."

"Good find," Derek says, flashing a sidelong grin at Spencer. The smug smile he gets in return makes him laugh, and he sets the antique knob back in the box and shakes his head. "No surprise there."

And it isn't, because it turns out Spencer's got a knack for this kind of thing. Not that they've had that many chances to spend their weekends digging through antique shops for authentic hardware, but whenever they do Spencer always comes up with a gem that Derek would have missed on his own. He's the reason they made an extra ten grand on the last place they renovated; Spencer was the one who found not only the perfect hardware for the kitchen, but the right fixtures for nearly every room in that old Craftsman.

Derek had always enjoyed the process of taking something apart and putting it back together again, tearing down walls and pulling out plumbing and replacing it all with new and fresh and unspoiled. He still loved the process, but Spencer brought a whole new perspective to his renovations, and he had to admit they made a great team.

"Anything else worth looking at?"

"No, the rest of this stuff is pretty much junk," Spencer answers, looking around at the antique store as though he's making sure he didn't miss anything. He's still grinning, too, obviously impressed with himself and Derek can't decide whether to roll his eyes or kiss Spencer. He's leaning toward the kissing when his cell rings, followed a second later by the sound of Spencer's phone.

Derek sighs and reaches for his phone, glancing down to see Garcia's number. "So much for a quiet weekend," he mutters, sliding his arm around Spencer's shoulder to steer him toward the cash register before he answers the call. Whatever case they're about to take on comes before their renovation, but they're already here and there's no sense letting Spencer's latest find slip through their fingers.
