Note: For those of you who aren't familiar with Michael Jackson's early solo stuff; you know, back when he didn't look like a bad science experiment, the title and summary is a reference to the song "Billy Jean'.*****************************
When Gil declared his feelings for Sara, she was overjoyed. After years of pain and waiting, she finally had the man of her dreams. In the grand scheme of things, it should have been the end of the fairy tale, they'd ride off into the sunset together with the birds chirping and all of that. And for awhile, that's exactly what it was, perfect.
Then Greg was beaten and left for dead by a bunch of punks and things began to change. The changes were subtle at first, Gil began taking Greg with him on cases like he had when Greg had been training. Sara didn't think anything of it at first; after what Greg had been through, Gil just wanted make sure he was safe. But then, even after the coroner's inquest was over, Gil still kept Greg with him. It worried Sara a little but she told herself she was being silly, Gil loved her, and his concern for Greg and his safety was understandable since Greg hadn't been acting the same since the assault.
Then Gil went on sabbatical for a month and the only message Sara got was a cocoon on a stick. She tried to tell herself that it was Gil's version of a sign of affection but it still bothered her. She told herself that he was just busy with his students and things would be back to normal once he came back.
But when Gil came back from his sabbatical, things got worse. Gil didn't come over every night like he used to, and when he did, they only talked about work and Gil usually left when Sara went to bed.
And then there was the thing with Greg. Sara noticed that Gil had quit keeping Greg glued to him but their relationship seemed…different. Sara couldn't put her finger on it, but it just seemed that the two men were more relaxed around each other. Like she and Gil had been right after they started their relationship and it made her suspicious. She honestly didn't think Gil was gay but she couldn't help the insane jealousy that she felt everytime she saw them working together.
Then one night, she decided to take the bull by the horns and confront Gil about what was going on and see if anything was going on between him and Greg.
Gil's townhouse was dark when she pulled up. Using her key, she let herself into the house but didn't see anything out of the ordinary until she heard a soft moan coming from Gil's bedroom. She made her way to the bedroom and eased the door open, hoping that Gil was just masturbating. What she saw, shattered her world.
Gil was having sex with Greg. Or that's what Sara figured you'd call it. Fucking like animals was a better description. Gil had Greg pinned on his stomach and was pounding into him with a force that stunned Sara. Gil was NEVER like that with her. He was kissing and biting Greg's neck and shoulders, leaving marks that clothing would just barely cover. They never did that with each other, too big of a risk that someone would see and figure things out.
What really stunned her was that Greg wasn't trying to get away. She'd seen Greg without his shirt on and had watched him work, she knew how strong he was but he wasn't trying to get away. She knew something about BDSM but it had never interested her. She didn't understand how someone could say they got pleasure from being hurt.
"Such a willing little slut aren't you Greg? You love it when I fuck you like this, don't you?" Sara was shocked, Gil NEVER spoke to her like that. Hell, if anyone said anything while they were having sex, it was her.
"Yes!" Greg cried out, "Please Gil! Please, you feel so good." That seemed to please Gil, he flipped Greg onto his back, put the younger man's long legs over his shoulders and began pounding into Greg's body even harder, if that was possible. Soon both men were crying out their releases. They laid together, kissing and whispering endearments. Words that Gil never whispered to her.
Sara knew she needed to get out of here. She couldn't stand to watch another minute of this betrayal. She began to creep away but Greg's soft voice pulled her attention back to the bedroom.
"So when are you going to tell Sara?"
Sara stopped, her more rational side screamed at her to leave, but it was looking at a nasty car crash, she couldn't look away.
"I'm going to tell her tomorrow over dinner. I figured that being in a public place will keep her from making too big of a scene."
Greg's voice was skeptical, "Do you honestly think that is going to keep her from making a scene?"
Gil sounded sheepish, "Toucha." It was quiet for a minute before Greg spoke again.
"What're you going to tell her?"
Gil sighed, "The truth. That I've been lying to her and to myself and that it isn't fair to her to let her keep thinking that I feel something that I don't. And that I still care about her as a friend." He was quiet again, "Somehow I don't think she's going to let me get that far but that's what I'm planning to tell her."
Sara crept out of the house as fast as she dared. The minute her feet hit the pavement, she ran to her car and slammed the door and sat in the driver's seat, tears rolling down her face. She couldn't believe this was happening! Gil had been lying to her the whole time? She sniffled, and wiped her eyes; how could this be happening? She'd given Gil her heart and soul, she waited for him for seven years, hoping he'd finally see how much she loved him and it had all been a lie?
She tried to rationalize what she'd heard, trying to find some hint that Gil was playing Greg, but she couldn't find one. Greg was the one Gil wanted to be with, that was obvious. The man she'd been in love with for almost ten years was in love with another man, not her. He'd been very convincing, she'd thought she'd known him and his feelings, and she'd been wrong. Or had she been lying to herself as much as Gil had? Trying to convince herself that all his gestures were romantic when they really hadn't.
Well, one thing was for sure, she wasn't going to dinner with him. She wasn't going to humiliate herself like that. She'd lost a lot of things waiting for Gil but she still had her pride and he and Greg weren't going to get that. She'd had her resignation saved on her computer for years and she didn't have all that much stuff that she'd desperately miss. She could pack her things, send the resignation and be gone before tomorrow night. She started her car and smiled ruefully when the radio started blaring Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean', right on the line that seemed sum up her whole situation:
"And Mama always told me
Be careful who you love
Be careful what you do
Because a lie becomes the truth.'She flipped the radio to another station, Michael Jackson was wrong, no matter what you said, a lie never becomes the truth.
