Summary: How to get the perfect present.

I listen to them updating each other on what has happened since we last were here. I watch the back of his carefully styled wild hair. Since day one I haven’t been able to stop watching him. He has his own special kind of beauty I guess most of it comes from his energy. I can’t think of anybody who can go the distance with him I certainly can’t but I try.

“Hey bro fallen asleep back there?” My sister jerks me back to reality.

“Nah, just thinking.”

“Gawking is more like it eh?” She always calls things for what they are. He laughs and turns his head and he has his I-know-you-love-me smile on. I can only smile back.

“So you got something nice for momma?” I know he’ll answer and sink back in the seat listening to him explain about the pearls we have got for her birthday. I had no idea what to get her, but he always do. I know he pays attention to what people wear so he is so much better at present shopping. I can only do it if I’ve got a list.

I think back to our second date I told him that night; that if he wanted more than roses he would have to make a list.

Ever since that day small notes appear in my pockets stating his wishes. He is wearing the dark blue shirt I got him last month one of the few things I bought without him wishing for it; he was so excited that I could barely move when he was satisfied.

I love his energy in bed even if it renders me unmovable for hours. I know he’s willing to do anything and would if I don’t tell him what I want and don’t want.

“Hey Nicky.” He is so gentle when he brings me back to reality, he knows how lost in thoughts I get sometimes.

“Hey.” I look around and we’re driving down the road my parents live on.

“Momma!” I sweep her up in my arms and kiss her on the cheeks and release her to let Greg have his hug.

“Oh it’s so good to have you boys home again!” We go inside and take our luggage up to our room for the next 5 days. I kiss him; just a quick one on the mouth I don’t want to start anything now.

“Let’s go and see how much your momma expects us to be able to eat this time.” He smiles and takes my hand dragging me off downstairs.

Tonight will be good, but I’m dreading for tomorrow when my two oldest sisters and their families arrive; they all hate Greg. I don’t know why. To begin with I just thought it was homophobia; but it can’t be since one of them has son who is gay too. Every time we have to spend time with them I hope things will change. Everybody else in my family adores Greg to a point that can make real jealous sometimes.

I try to stretch my legs; but the guy in front of me has leaned his seat back as far as possible. I look at Greg who is tapping away on his laptop. It surprised me at first when I learned that he keeps a diary. I guess he is writing down the last few days. They were better than I feared but not as good as I had hoped. At least there was no open hostility just a few polite words and then nothing.

Momma loved the pearls. I am so proud of him; everybody else’s presents were boring and not quite as well received.
