They had talked about it. The what ifs, the possibilities, but if Gil was honest he hadn't thought much on it. It was the 21st Century. Laws had been passed. Discrimination was a thing of the past. When in all honesty, he of all people should have known better. He had seen what hate and prejudice could do; he had spoken for the ones who were silenced. Watching it all unfold in the middle of the lab had to be the worst nightmare come true. Sometimes Gil felt more naive than the innocence his lover truly held. Had held.
He watched as Nick's parents confronted him in the lab. They had just showed up unexpected. Nick had a bright smile on his face as he had headed for the lobby; he hadn't been able to make it to Texas for Christmas due to a huge case the whole lab had been pulled into. Gil though was partially thankful for the case; he had gotten to spend Christmas with his lover, something he had truly cherished. They had been together for over a year, and Gil had never been happier. Every day he felt blessed to have someone like Nick look at him with those brown eyes just filled with love.
And right now his lover was being attacked by the very people who claimed to love him. It made Gil sick to his stomach. All he wanted to do was go to Nick's side and tell the Stokes to leave. But they had an agreement. Only a select few were to know about their relationship. It was the one thing Nick demanded. It wasn't for his sake; it was for Gil's, and Gil hated it.
Nick stared at his parents as they continued on their ranting about his choices and lifestyle. At first he was happy to see them, and that quickly lead to dismay and shock as they started screaming and crying at him in the middle of the lab's lobby. His father going on about he was a disgrace to the Stokes name, his mother crying about the loss of his soul, and that he needed to repent. Both demanding to know why he did this to them, hurt his sisters, interchanging with demands for him to come to Texas so they can fix it.
"It's okay, honey." His mom laid a hand on his arm. "If you just come home, we can fix this. Vegas is sin city and makes people do things..."
Nick had had it. "Mom, Dad Vegas didn't make me gay! I lost my damn virginity when I was sixteen to the Football captain under the bleachers during homecoming!"
The lab suddenly got quieter. Gil's eyebrow went up and Nick's outburst. He knew his lover. Nick would sit back and take most abuse, until they crossed a fine line. What that line was most didn't know, which as Gil had learned, it was never a good idea to even get near it, because Nick pissed off though hot as hell, was not pretty if directed at you. He had seen it once, and only once, and never again did he go near that line, ever.
"How dare you speak to your mother that way!" Bill Stokes yelled at his son.
"Excuse me," Nick's voice dropped. "You come down to my place of work, screaming at the top of your lungs that no son of yours will be a fag. I'm not a child, and I'm not going to roll over and let you walk over me. This is my life and my choices."
"Well obviously you roll over for your supervisor!" Gillian Stokes glared at Grissom.
"What?" Nick glanced back at Gil then back towards his parents.
"It's a good thing your co-worker called us to inform us of this improper relationship," Bill pushed. "That your supervisor has taken advantage..."
The air in the room dropped. Gil's eyes narrowed; as much as he had learned never to cross that fine line with Nick. No one, repeat no one crossed his. Despite the anger flowing through him, he did find it quite humorous that all the occupants in the vicinity turned and stared at Sara as he moved towards Nick's side; he had to bite back a smile as he heard their friends on the sideline.
"Ten bucks says Catherine gets to Sara first," Warrick had whispered to Greg.
"Dude, twenty on Nick going bad ass on her way before Cath can get to her," Greg countered.
"Double the bet, Gil is going to rip her a new one," Brass added watching the scene unfold.
"Mr. and Mrs. Stokes," Gil's voice was firm. "I'm not sure what a fellow co-worker has informed you of Nick's personal and private life, but it doesn't give either of you the right to come into his work place and attack him publicly."
"I should have you arrested!" Gillian glared at him.
"Last I check, Mrs. Stokes, Nick was well over the age of consent," Grissom replied back.
"I'll have your job, seducing a subordinate..."
"I wasn't working for Gil when we got together." Nick shook his head. "Matter of fact, the higher ups in the lab know about our relationship; we had told them about it when I was transferred back to night shift. Arrangements have been made and the lab has no problem with it. My true friends and family know about Gil and respect and support our relationship."
"It's a sin." She shook her head. "I raised you to be a good boy..."
"You raise me to be my own person," Nick pointed out.
"Is it," she started to cry again, "Is this because of her?"
Nick frowned. "Her? I don't know what you're talking about."
"The babysitter, the one that abused you," Gillian pushed.
Nick stared at his parents in shock. Gil took his hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze. "Leave. Now."
"I'm not leaving here until this situation is resolved," Bill argued.
"NOW!" Gil's voice raised in a threatening tone. "You come in here, and drag out Nick's personal life in front of all these people without care to what this is doing to him. Get the hell out of my lab. Hell, out of my city!"
"I want you away from my son!" Gillian stepped forward to grab Nick, only to have him step back away from her.
"I'm not your son," Nick spat out, his voice filled with anger and pain. "If I was your son you would accept me for who I am. You would not throw my abuser into my face to make my choices easier for you to swallow. It's obvious you can't accept me being gay. I then in return will not allow you to belittle me; if you don't want a gay son, then you no longer have me as your son." Nick turned and walked down the hall. He paused slightly at the door, his eyes falling on to Sara. "I hope it was everything you wished it to be, but if your goal was to get me to leave Grissom - it failed miserably." He leaned closer a snarl in his throat. "I fucking survived being buried alive for him - your games are shit compared to that." He turned and disappeared down the hall.
Greg's eyes went wide. "Pay up, boys."
~ Grissom's Office ~
Gil sat down next to Nick on the couch. "They've left."
"I'm sure they'll be back, or I'll get a hundred or so emails and phone calls from good hearted church goers trying to save me." He sighed, his head resting on the back of the couch. "I'm sorry they outed you."
Grissom snorted. "I don't care. Like you stated, Ecklie already knew and so did the sheriff. Our close friends and family knew so I could care less if Vegas finds out we're together. I'm the one who should be sorry that I never dealt with Sara. I never suspected she would do this though."
"Honestly it's tame on what I thought she could do, but it's going to be difficult working with her," Nick answered. "She betrayed me by calling my parents, and now my personal life is gossip for the lab."
"And you hate that more than anything." Gil pulled Nick close to him. He knew Nick hated it, people talking about him behind his back or even in front of him. He hated the attention or spotlight focused on him. In time he had a feeling it would die down, but in the meantime his lover wais going to feel very uncomfortable. "I'm not sure what to do with Sara."
"I'll deal." Nick shrugged. "She's not worth the hassle truthfully."
"You two decent?" Brass called as he stepped into the office followed by Catherine, Greg and Warrick.
"No, we're having hot angsty sex; go away," Nick muttered from Gil's shoulder.
"Can I watch?" Greg hopped onto the desk, smiling.
"NO!" Nick glared at him.
Grissom's eyes narrowed. "Dumpster dives for you."
"Damn," Greg grumbled.
"Figured I'd let you know, the lab is well in full gossip alert, though watching Hodges is quite humorous." Warrick shook his head. "When word got to him and I quote 'What, someone actually didn't know they were fucking like rabbits; what hole we're they buried under?'"
Nick sat back up. "And consensus?"
"Most not surprised, most don't care, a few grumbles about the gay lab rats and then ran off when Bobby glared at them, but overall no one really cared." Catherine smiled. "Though Sara right now is getting the cold shoulder from about everyone."
Nick shrugged. "My parents?"
"Gone," Brass said. "I told them if they make any hassle from either of you, we know how to hide the bodies."
Grissom gave Brass a small little evil smirk. Jim had known Gil for a long while, and he'd seen that little smirk a few times. The Stokes better flee Vegas quickly.
"We figure that since shift is over we've come to take you both out to breakfast as congratulations on your being out of the closet." Greg smirked. "Then you two can go home and have that hot monkey sex."
Nick looked at Gil. "Can we just kill him?"
Grissom shook his head and stood up. "Torturing him will be so much more fun. Breakfast, then tomorrow back to what we do."
"We got your back." Warrick looked at the two of them. "You know that."
"Thanks, man." Nick smiled at him clapping him on the shoulder.
"Food, I'm a hungry growing boy." Greg pushed everyone out of the office.
Grissom stopped short when he saw Sara standing down the hall. He signaled he would catch up and walked towards her. Nick stayed back and watched the scene unfold.
"Grissom," she started.
"No." Gil held up his hand. "You crossed a line today, one you can never cross back over. You betrayed a team member and you betrayed me. Whatever excuse you can say or come up with won't change the facts. Nick's lost his family because of you and your games. It could have been worse; ever consider that Nick's life or mine could be endangered because now we've been outed?" She gasped slightly. "This lab is about teamwork, about helping others, talking for those who can't. Not about you or what you want. The fact you stooped to this level shows me that you don't understand that. I can't fire you or make you leave, but you might want to think hard and long about what has happened and your part in it. I'm with Nick, and nothing you do will change that. Nothing."
He turned and walked away. He gave Nick a bright smile and the two headed out to the cars to have breakfast with their friends.
