Nick knew something was going on with Gil.  They had been down this road before, but Nick decided that he wasn't making the trip this time.  He felt that enough was enough, and that Gil had played him for a fool his last time.  He knew what he was up against, and had decided that this time would be the last time.  He was not going to keep wondering if Gil was going to stay with him, or if he was going to be with Sara.

When it happened the first time, Nick was hurt and confused, but his feelings for Gil over-rode everything else, especially when Gil promised that it wouldn't happen again.  It wasn't long before Nick was eating out of the palm of Gil's hand again, and Nick didn't realize at the time that it was all lies and bullshit.  The sad part was the fact that Nick really did love Gil and he mistakenly thought that Gil would see that and it would be enough to make him change his ways.

Everything was fine for a while, and now here Nick was back at square one.  Gil had started up with the same old excuses as to why he couldn't come over, he had also started pairing himself up with Sara on crime scenes, and had started subtly picking Nick's cases to pieces. Now that Nick knew the score, he decided to take action, if for no other reason than to prove to Gil that he wouldn't be a doormat anymore.

When Nick arrived at the lab that night, he headed straight to Gil's office.  Sure enough, Sara was sitting on the sofa while Gil was seated at his desk laughing at something Sara had said.  Nick strode in and closed the door behind him.  Gil glanced up and visibly paled at the look on Nick's face. Sara mumbled a greeting but Nick didn't bother to reply. Gil asked if there was something wrong, and Nick replied that there was.

Sara stood to leave, but Nick told her to stay because what he had to say concerned her also. Gil began to fidget and look more than a bit nervous.  Nick proceded to tell Gil that he had figured out that Gil was seeing Sara again, and that even though it wasn't the first time, it would indeed be the last time that he left him for her. Nick then informed Gil that he hoped Gil was satisfied with his choice, and that he hoped they would be happy. He then turned and left the office feeling much better than he had in a while.

Nick was unconcerned with the fall-out because it really wasn't his problem anymore. He was tired or all the stress this was causing him, and it felt good to let it go.  He decided that it was time to worry about Nick, and Nick only for a while.

After Nick got home, he was getting ready for bed when he heard someone knocking on his door.  He looked through the peephole and saw Gil standing on his porch.  He opened the door and asked Gil what he was doing there.  Gil asked if he could come in, but Nick told him that there was nothing to discuss, and that he needed to go.

Gil started to tell Nick that he didn't mean to hurt him, but Nick told him to save it, and that as far as he was concerned Gil didn't matter anymore.  He went on to say that he would no longer entertain any more discussion on the matter and that he considered it over and done.

Gil turned and walked away as Nick shut and locked the door.  Nick went back to his bedroom and went to sleep. At the lab that night things were a bit tense, but Nick took it all in stride.  He caught Gil watching him, but acted like he didn't notice. Sara was cold but professional, but Nick ignored her for the most part.

Nick had to admit that it felt really good to stand his ground.  When he got home from the lab, he thought back over the last 36 hours and decided that he would have to be a whole lot more careful and hoped that someday he would find someone to give his heart to that truly deserved it.
