Nick walked into the trace lab and smiled at the man sleeping in the chair.

br /> “Hey Hodges, you better wake up, Grissom is coming.” Nick said loudly.

br /> “What? David jumped up. “I can explain. I was waiting for the results of..” he trailed off as he heard laughter. “Nicholas Stokes! That wasn’t funny.”

br /> “I wish I had a camera. Man, I didn’t know you could move so fast.”

br /> “Is there a reason you are here other then to annoy me?” David glared.

br /> “I just came by to see if you had left yet.” Nick chuckled. “I didn’t know I’d catch you sleeping on the job.”

br /> “I wasn’t sleeping, I was resting my eyes.”

br /> “Right, like I can’t tell by now when you’re asleep.”

br /> David rolled his eyes. “Don’t you have something to do?”

br /> “I’m waiting on Brass to call. They caught the suspect; he’s in route to the station now.”

br /> “Great, maybe we can finally go home. This working double shift kills me. I don’t know how you CSIs do it all the time.”

br /> “Wow. Was that an actual compliment?”

br /> Just then Jacqui walked in. “Hi Nick. David, Grissom said we could go home.”

br /> “About time.” David grumbled as she walked back out of the lab.

br /> Nick’s phone rang. “Stokes. Ok be right there.”

br /> “Brass?”

br /> “Yeah. I’ll see you at home.”

br /> “Nick, did you forget we rode in together?”

br /> “I guess I did. Man that seems like days ago.” Nick frowned.

br /> “I’ll just hang out here till you’re done.” David yawned. “Maybe I’ll go nap in the break room.”

br /> “No way. I remember the last time you slept in there. I had to listen for hours about how everybody woke you up when they came into the room. I’m not going through that again. I’ll catch a ride with somebody or I can get a cab.”

br /> “I could take the cab.”

br /> “Wait, you’re offering to let me drive your car? Your baby? You must still be asleep.”

br /> David shook his head. “Do you want to or not?”

br /> “Thanks but you go ahead.” Nick answered. He knew if anything happened to David’s car he’d never hear the end of it.

br /> “Alright, but don’t say I never offered.”

br /> Nick glanced around; making sure Grissom or Ecklie wasn’t in sight, then leaned in and gave David a kiss. “See you in a couple hours, baby.”

br /> Usually David would have giving Nick hell for kissing him at work. But for some reason he couldn’t really explain, he grabbed Nick’s arm as he started to walk away. “Nicky?”

br /> “Yeah, Dave.” Nick braced himself for the lecture that was coming.”

br /> “I know this is going to sound stupid and way too girlish but oh never mind. You better go.”

br /> “What is it baby?” Nick was worried about the look in the blue eyes staring back at him.

br /> “You’ll laugh.” David mumbled.

br /> “I won’t. Promise.”

br /> David repeated Nick’s earlier action of glancing around then whispered “Would you hold me?”

David asked so low, Nick had to strain to hear him. Even then he thought he misunderstood. But the blush on his lover’s face told him he had really said it. Nick pulled him into his arms. “What’s wrong, baby?”

br /> David sighed. He felt so safe wrapped in Nick’s arms. God, he must be really tired. “Nothing’s wrong. I just needed this. Thanks for not laughing. You’d better go.”

br /> Nick kissed him again. “I’ll be home as soon as I can. Love you.”

br /> “You too.” David couldn’t shake the bad feeling he had as he watched Nick leave.

*************

Nick was so glad to be home. He was worried about David. It wasn’t like the man to ask to be held, definitely not at work. It was probably the exhaustion talking he kept telling himself. He’d almost convinced himself until he walked into their bedroom and froze.

br /> The bed was empty. Not just empty, it hadn’t been slept in. He knew David couldn’t wait to get home and sleep. So where the hell was he?  “Dave, are you here?” he shouted. No answer.

br /> Nick decided maybe he had fallen asleep in the car. He went and opened the door leading to the garage. David’s car wasn’t there. Damn. He went back into the kitchen and called David’s cell. It went straight to voice mail. “Dave, I’m home call me ASAP.” Next he paged him. Nick was trying not to panic but with every second that passed he knew something was wrong. He called the lab but David wasn’t there. Alright, think, where would he have gone? Why wasn’t he answering his phone? God, what if he’d fallen asleep at the wheel and had an accident. Nick stared at the phone willing it to ring. Finally he picked up the phone book and started calling the hospitals. He breathed a sigh of relief. Nobody fitting David’s description had been admitted to any of them. Nick’s hands were shaking as he started to dial the morgue. He hung up before the first ring. After all, everybody at the morgue knew David. They would have let him know by now.

br /> Nick got into his truck and started retracing David’s steps to the lab. Maybe he had pulled over, to sleepy to drive. Nick hadn’t seen his car during the cab ride home, but he had his eyes shut most of the way.

br /> Nick was about a mile from the lab when he spotted David’s car. It was pulled onto the shoulder of the road. Nick parked behind it. He could tell even before he got out that David wasn’t in the car. He got out and looked around.

br /> “David? Where are you, baby?” He yelled. He started walking towards the car. It didn’t take a CSI to tell there had been a struggle. “Dave answer me.” He felt like he couldn’t breathe as he stared at the car. The driver’s side window was busted out and god was that blood on the seat.

br /> Nick closed his eyes. This is a dream he told himself. I’m going to wake up any minute now and I will be in David’s arms. But as he opened his eyes and saw the blood again, he knew it wasn’t.

br /> Nick just stood there staring until the CSI in him took over. He didn’t touch anything, just walked back to his truck and called Grissom. He sat on the hood until the he heard the sirens approaching. The whole team had come.

br /> “What happened?” Grissom asked as they walked up to Nick.

br /> “I don’t know.  He said he was going home. But he wasn’t there when I arrived. He didn’t answer his cell or his pager so I decided to retrace his steps.”

br /> “Catherine, call the hospitals…” Grissom started.

br /> “I’ve already done that.” Nick interrupted.

br /> Nobody asked if he called the morgue. They all knew that Grissom would have heard if David were there. Instead they started processing the car. Brass started asking Nick questions.

br /> “When did you last see him?”

br /> “Right before I came down to interview our suspect.”

br /> “Did he do or say anything out of the ordinary?”

br /> Yeah he had but Nick didn’t want to say that.  David would kill him.

br /> “Nick?”

br /> “He’d been working a double. He was exhausted.”

br /> “Um, Nicky, that’s not what I asked.” Brass knew that Nick wasn’t telling him something.

br /> “We hugged.” Well, that was what happened. He didn’t see the need to say that David had asked him too.

br /> “That’s unusual?” Brass asked

br /> They were standing close enough for the others to hear. Warrick looked up and said “Man, last week I saw Nick try to kiss Hodges in the parking lot. I thought the death glare he was sending would kill poor Nicky.”

br /> He had no idea anybody saw that. Nick put his head in his hands as he remembered that day.

“Hey baby, going home?” Nick stopped in front of David.

“Very astute of you, Nicky.”

“I miss you. I hate when you fill in on day shift.” Nick moved closer and started to kiss him.

“What the hell are you doing?” David backed up and glared. “You know how I feel about keeping our relationship out of work.”

“Well, technically we aren’t at work, we’re outside of it.”

Nick gave his best grin hoping it would soften David’s mood a little. Yeah right. He just sent him another glare. “We’ll talk about this at home.” With that he walked to his car and left.

br /> “David isn’t big on public displays, especially at work. Nick sighed.

br /> “So what was different about today?” Brass inquired.

br /> “I don’t know. I thought it was strange. I should have made him talk to me but I just let it go.”

br /> “Does he have any enemies?”

br /> “Not that I know of.” Nick saw Sara swabbing the blood on the seat. David’s blood.  He couldn't stand it anymore. He crossed the road and threw up.

br /> “Nicky” Catherine said coming up behind him. “We’re going to find him.” She put her arm around him and steered him back to the truck.

br /> “This is all my fault, Cath” he cried.

“Why do you say that?”

br /> “He wanted to wait for me but I didn’t want to hear him gripe so I told him to go home. He even offered to get a cab but I turned him down. God I should have let him wait.”

br /> “Then we’d be looking for both of you.” Brass said dryly.

“I could have protected him though.” Nick insisted. He turned to watch the tow truck coming down the road. They had finished processing the scene and were taking the car back to the lab. “Dave’s going to hate us messing with his baby.” Nick said to no one in particular.

Nick walked through the crime lab feeling useless. He wasn’t allowed to handle any of the evidence. He was too close to David, Grissom had said. Nick knew the real reason though. In cases like this, the lover was always the first suspect. He was sure none of his friends thought he did it but it was protocol. So here he was wondering around, waiting. Someone, he thinks it was Sara, told him to try to sleep but every time he closed his eyes he could see the bloody seat. That lead his mind to all kinds of places he didn’t want to go.

br /> Grissom had promised him he could sit in on any discussions about the case, so when Nick saw the team heading to one of the conference rooms, he headed there too.

br /> “What have we got?” Grissom asked.

br /> Greg, who had handled the DNA testing himself, spoke up first. “No luck with the hairs. They were all either David’s or Nick’s.” He glanced over at Nick before continuing. The blood on the driver’s seat was David’s. The hairs we found on the car window were also his.”

br /> No one said anything for a minute. Then Catherine spoke up. “Warrick and I have been recreating the struggle. From the blood spatter, it appears that someone fell or was shoved into the window.”

br /> “David.” Nick whispered. He jumped up and headed for the door.

br /> “Where are you going?” Sara asked.

br /> “I’m going to find him.”

br /> “Nick, we don’t know where he is.”

br /> “I can’t just sit here when he’s out there somewhere bleeding. God only knows what’s happening to him. I have to find him.” Nick shouted.

br /> “Nicky, calm down. We will find him.” Grissom said.

br /> “When? After he’s bleed to death?” Nick could feel the tears in his eyes. “He’s waiting for me to come and find him.”

br /> No one knew what to say to comfort him. It was true, the longer it took, the slimmer the chances that they would find David alive.

br /> Finally, Grissom asked Nick to at least listen to the rest of the evidence. Nick reluctantly sat back down.

br /> “Jacqui’s still working on prints.” Sara sighed. “So far, only Nick’s and David’s though.”

br /> Suddenly Nick had an idea. Why he hadn’t thought about it before he didn’t know. “What about tracking him through his cell phone?”

br /> Warrick and Greg exchanged looks before Warrick said “Sorry Nicky, but we found his phone and pager on the side of the road.”

“What about the skid marks?” Nick asked dejected.

br /> “Apparently someone ran him off the road. The tracks are being run through the database now.”

br /> Just then Jacqui burst into the room. “I got a hit.” she said excitedly.

br /> Everyone turned to look at the folder she was waving. She handed it to Grissom as she continued. “Prints belong to one Henry Gibson.”

br /> Grissom handed the CSIs each a page from the file.

br /> “Says here, he’s an ex con. Arrested in Seattle for assault and battery. Long history of domestic violence. Been out of prison almost 3 months.” Catherine read.

br /> “Ever heard of him, Nick?” Sara asked.

br /> “No.”

“What about Rebecca Gibson?” She was the victim.”

br /> “No. David’s never mentioned being in Seattle either.” Nick put his elbows on the table and held his head in his hands. They were never going to find him in time.

br /> “Hey, listen to this.” They all looked at Greg. “This is a list of witnesses at Gibson’s trail. The first name on here is David Hodges.”

br /> Pages rattled as they all searched for the one with David’s statement on it. “I found it.” Sara shouted. She looking at Grissom, who nodded, she handed the paper to Nick.

br /> “Thanks” he mumbled. He read it to himself.

br /> “Nicky?” Grissom said.

br /> “Oh sorry. Basically, David testified to the fact he saw Gibson running away from the scene. He took Rebecca to the hospital after she got beat up. She almost died. She’s David’s sister.”

br /> “He never told you any of this?” Warrick asked.

br /> Nick shook his head. “I know he has a sister, Becca. She lives in England with her two daughters.”

br /> “Says here Gibson is not allowed to contact his wife or their daughters.” Greg read.

br /> “But a guy like Gibson would want to find them anyway.” Brass said. Nobody had noticed when he walked into the room. “I’ll get in touch with the warden and his parole officer. Maybe someone can give us something to go on.”

br /> “Thanks Jim.” Nick had thought finding out who had David would make him feel better but it just made him feel worse. It wasn’t some random stranger it was someone who had a grudge against him.

br /> Nick tried to stand up but his legs gave out. Greg kept him from falling and helped him over to the couch.

“Lay down, Nicky. You won’t do David any good if you collapse from exhaustion.”

br /> Nick was suddenly too tired to argue. He felt as if he was letting David down by going to sleep but he couldn’t stop himself. His last thought was that if he’d let David sleep here, they would be together now.

br /> ***********************

Nick was walking though the lab. He could hear David calling him. Begging him to help. There was blood everywhere. It was so cold. Colder than the morgue. He could hear David screaming now. He finally found the door. “David, baby, are you in there?”

“Nicky, hurry please.”

Nick tired and tired. He couldn’t get the door open. He pulled out his gun. “I’m going to try to shoot the lock. Get away from the door.” he yelled. He emptied his gun into the door but it still wouldn’t open. David had started screaming again. “Just hang on baby.” I’m going to go get help.”

“I can’t Nicky. You didn’t find me in time.”

“No David! David answer me. David!

br /> “Nick.. Nicky, wake up.” Sara was shaking him. “You’re having a nightmare.”

br /> “David!” Nick cried as he bolted upright. There were tears streaming down his face and he could hardly breathe.

br /> Sara put her arms around him.  After a few minutes, he pulled away and wiped his eyes. “Sorry, Sara.”

br /> “You don’t have to apologize for being scared for him.” she said.

br /> “Thanks. Is there any news?”

br /> “Brass has the Seattle police talking to Gibson’s old cellmates now.” She looked at Nick. “When was the last time you ate?”

br /> “I can’t eat.”

br /> “Greg’s right. You won’t do David any good if you don’t take care of yourself.”

br /> “Ok, I’ll eat an apple.”

br /> “Good. We wouldn’t want David fussy at us for letting you wither away.”

Nick couldn’t help but smile at the image of his lover saying “What do you mean he wouldn’t eat? There are five of you. You could have force fed him. Now look at him. He’s all bones.”

God, he missed David so much.

Nick paced back and forth in the break room.  They had checked all the hotels and motels in and around Vegas. No one recognized Henry Gibson.  Nick was trying hard not to think about what that bastard might be doing to David. If he was even still alive. Don’t think like that, Stokes. You’re going to find him in time. Nick told himself. He glanced at his watch and
memories of their first anniversary washed over him.

“Happy anniversary, baby.” Nick smiled as he handed David a small box.

David leaned over and kissed him then handed him a box too. “Happy anniversary.”

David tore the wrapping paper off the box and opened it. He couldn’t believe it. It was the watch they had seen at the store a few weeks ago.

“Look at the back.”

He glanced at Nick then turned the watch over. It had an inscription on it. Dave Till the end of time Nicky. He stared at it for a moment then started laughing.

“It wasn’t supposed to be funny.” The hurt in Nick’s voice was evident.

“I’m sorry Nicky.” David said trying to control his laughter. “I love it. Thank you.”

“Yeah that’s why you are laughing.”

“Come on babe. Don’t get upset.” David frowned. “Open yours.”

Nick sighed and tore the paper from the box. He laughed. It was the same watch as he had given David.

“Turn it over.”

Nick slowly turned it over. Nicky For all time Dave

“Great minds think alike, huh?” David chuckled.

br /> Nick was drawn back to the present by someone saying his name. He turned to see Greg standing in the doorway.

br /> “Grissom wants us in the conference room.”

br /> “Yeah, ok.” Nick sighed.

br /> As they walked into the room, Nick could see everyone was there, including Brass. He didn’t even bother to ask if there was anything new, he just sat down in the nearest empty chair.

br /> “I just talked to the Seattle PD.” Brass said. “They talked to Gibson’s cellmates. Seems all the man ever talked about was finding his two little girls. He said if he couldn’t find his wife he’d track down her, um, fag brother.”

br /> “David will never tell him anything.” Nick twisted his watch band nervously. “Hell, I can’t even find a phone number or address for her in his things.”

br /> Nick wondered how long Gibson would keep David alive when he realized he wasn’t going to get any information.

br /> ***************

br /> Grissom insisted that Nick get some sleep. He’d been awake for almost three days. He laid down in Grissom’s office. Despite his unwillingness, he fell asleep within minutes.

He was walking through the desert following the blood trail. Greg was behind him testing every drop. It was all David’s. Nick started running. He ran till his lungs felt like they were going to burst. He was alone now. He could hear David calling his name. He started running again. “David, where are you?”

“Nick, hurry I don’t have much time left.” David answered weakly.

“I’m coming Dave. Hang on.” Finally he saw David. He ran up to him. “David?”

David’s blue eyes looked up at him. “I’ve been waiting for you but it’s too late now.”

br /> Nick woke up screaming “No!” It took him a minute to realize it had only been a dream. God, I’m not sleeping again till we find him, he thought to himself. He decided to go get some coffee. As he entered the break room he saw Jacqui sitting at a table, head in her hands, crying.

br /> “Jacqui?”

br /> She jerked her head up. When she saw who it was she wiped the tears away and tried to smile. “Hey Nick” she mumbled. “Sorry”

br /> “Don’t be.” He walked over and hugged her. “Thank you for caring about him.” Then he found himself repeating what everyone had been telling him since this nightmare started. “We’re going to find him.”

br /> *********

br /> They were at a dead end. It was as if Gibson had left Seattle and vanished. The only proof that he was ever in Vegas was his fingerprints in David’s car. David had been missing for two and a half days now. He was probably dead but nobody dared voice that thought.  They were all worried about Nick. Between his exhaustion, worry and guilt, they were afraid he was going to have a nervous breakdown. He just kept repeating “He’s waiting for me to save him.” He wouldn’t go to sleep. He said the nightmares were too terrifying.

br /> Nick was playing with his watch band again when he heard a phone ringing. It took him a second to realize it was his phone. “Stokes”

br /> “I think I’ve got something here that belongs to you.” a voice on the other end said.

br /> “Gibson?” Nick motioned for Warrick to trace the call.

br /> “I’ll make you a trade. I’ll gave you back David for my girls.”

br /> “Let me talk to him.”

br /> Laughter. “Sorry, David can’t talk at the moment.”

br /> “Listen, you bastard, you’re not getting anything till I talk to him.”

br /> There was silence on the line and Nick was afraid Gibson had hung up. But then he heard a commotion and Gibson said something he couldn’t really hear. Then a weak voice said “Nick”

br /> “David! Are you alright, baby?”

br /> “Don’t tell him anything, Nicky.”

br /> Nick heard Gibson cursing and then what sounded like someone being hit.

br /> “Dave? Are you still there?”

br /> “If you ever want to see the fag again, you’d better bring me what I want.” Gibson ordered. “I’ll call back in five hours.”

br /> Nick turned and looked towards Warrick.

br /> “Sorry man, we didn’t get it.”

br /> Nick exploded with rage. First he turned the table over, next he swept everything off the counter. Then, he hit the wall with his fist.

br /> Warrick finally managed to grab him. “Jesus Nick, stop it.”

br /> “Let me go, Rick.” Nick yelled.

br /> “No, you just put your hand through a glass wall. You have to calm down. This isn’t helping.”

”Nothing’s helping.” Nick continued to struggle to get free. “He’s going to kill him and I can’t do anything to stop it.”

br /> By then everyone in the lab was watching the two men struggle. Jacqui walked in and softly said “Nick, don’t give up. At least we know he’s alive.”

br /> Nick let Jacqui lead him to a chair. She took his injured hand and started cleaning it. After she finished cleaning and bandaging it, she looked him in the eyes “You have to get some sleep.”

br /> “The nightmares are too awful, Jacqui.”

br /> “Wait here.” She ordered.

br /> Everyone just stared as she walked back into the room and handed Nick a lab coat. “Put it on.”

br /> Nick looked at her like she was crazy. David had once told him that arguing with Jacqui was useless when she had her mind set on something. So he took the coat and started to put it on. Suddenly he could smell David’s cologne. Jacqui smiled. “It’s his lab coat. It was still in trace.” she explained. “Now go lie down and sleep.” He nodded his head and hugged her.

br /> If Nick closed his eyes, it was almost like David was there with him. Even though his hand was throbbing, he went right to sleep.

“Wake up sleepy head.”

“David?” Nick cried.

“In the flesh. Now move over, I’m exhausted.

Nick moved and David laid down and pulled him into his arms. “I’m ok Nicky.”

“But how?”

“You think I’d let that bastard kill me? I have too much to live for. Besides you can’t get rid of me that easy.”

“Easy?” Nick shouted.  “Nothing about this has been…” he stopped as it was hard to yell at the man when he had your mouth covered with his. Damn that felt good.

“I know I should have told you.” David sighed as he pulled away.

“Should have told me what?”

“You know. Think Nicky.”

br /> Nick woke up and looked at his watch. He’d been asleep for two hours. He laid there thinking about his dream. Suddenly it came to him. He jumped up and ran to find Grissom. He found him and the rest of the team in the conference room. They all looked up as he came barreling in.

“I know how to find him.” He shouted excitedly.

They looked at him skeptically. He’d been sleeping so how could he possible know?

br /> “What is it, Nicky?” Catherine asked.

br /> “Gibson called our house the other day.”

br /> “Nick, you told us that you didn’t know anything about Gibson. So how do you know he called?”

br /> “David just told me.” Nick smiled.

br /> “He what? Did Gibson call again?” Grissom inquired.

br /> “No, he told me in a dream.” Nick could see the looks going around. He knew they thought he had lost it.

br /> “Nick, maybe you should get some more rest.” Warrick suggested.

br /> Now he was angry. They weren’t listening to him. “Fine, I’ll follow up on this by myself.” He shouted.

br /> “Wait Nick, explain about the call.” Sara knew he believed what he was saying. What could it hurt to listen?

br /> Nick sent her an appreciative look and started explaining. “We were getting ready for work. The phone rang as I was getting in the shower. When I got out I heard David slam the phone down. He said it was a telemarketer and he was giving him a piece of his mind. It seemed logical at the time.”

br /> They all nodded their head in agreement. It sounded like something David would definitely do.

br /> “So what makes you think it was Gibson?” Grissom asked.

br /> “David seemed upset and he practically insisted we ride to work together.”

br /> “Do you think Gibson threatened him?” Warrick wondered.

br /> “I don’t know.” Nick glanced around. “Do you believe me now?”

br /> Grissom nodded his head. “Warrick get Nick’s phone records.” It was a long shot but it was all they had.

br /> Nick felt relieved until Greg opened his mouth and said what everyone else had been thinking. “He might have called from a public phone.”

br /> Nick glared at him. Before anybody could move, he had Greg up out of his chair and shoved up against the wall.

br /> Greg knew Nick was going to hit him. You deserve it, he though. When are you going to learn to think before you speak?

br /> Catherine grabbed Nick’s arm. “Stop Nick. You don’t really want to hit Greg, do you?”

br /> Nick took a deep breath and slowly let Greg go. “Sorry G.”

br /> “No, I’m sorry. I have a big mouth sometimes.”

br /> “Sometimes?” Sara muttered.

br /> ***********

br /> It had been four hours since Gibson had called. They had one hour to get the phone records and hope he hadn’t called from a public phone. The phone company reassured Warrick that it was being faxed “any minute now”. Nick was ready to go over there and wave his gun around till he got the damn thing. That’s when he noticed it was gone.

br /> “Where the hell’s my gun?”

br /> Great, I would have to be the only one in the room. Greg thought. “Um, Rick took it when you were sleeping last time. I think Grissom has it now.”

br /> “Why?”

br /> “I was worried about you.” Warrick said as he entered the room. “You had just put your hand though a glass wall. I didn’t want you doing anything else stupid.”

br /> “You think I’m suicidal?”

br /> “I think you are upset and exhausted. You not exactly thinking straight.”

br /> “You don’t have to worry, I’m not suicidal.” Not yet anyway, he thought.

br /> Warrick was about to say something when Sara came into the room, followed by Grissom, Brass and Catherine. “The records just came. The call David got was made from a rental house on Chestnut.” Sara informed them.

br /> “Let’s go.” Nick ordered.

br /> “Nicky, I think it would be better if you stay here.” Grissom said.

br /> “What? There is no way in hell. One way or another, I’m going. Nick shouted. “I want my gun back too.”

br /> Everybody held their breath wondering if Grissom would fire Nick on the spot. Instead he just sighed. “Alright, you can come but I’m not giving you your gun back. You’re too emotionally involved.”

br /> Nick started to argue but he knew if giving the chance, he’d kill Gibson. He silently followed the team to their trucks.

br /> **********

br /> They had entered the house, guns drawn, to find Gibson asleep on the couch. Asleep. Nick couldn’t believe it.  Nick started towards him but Greg grabbed him and said “Let’s find David.”

br /> They searched the entire house and the garage. There was no sign that David had ever been there.

br /> “Where the hell is he?” Nick yelled as he walked back into the living room.

br /> Gibson just smiled. “You’ll never find him.”

br /> Brass and Warrick, who had had been keeping Nick from getting close to Gibson, let him go. Nick yanked the handcuffed man up from the chair and looked him in the eyes.

br /> “I had better find him or I swear you are a dead man.”

br /> “He threatened me. You all heard him.”

br /> “I didn’t hear anything. Did you, Gil?” Brass asked.

br /> “No. Anybody else?” Everyone shook their head.

br /> “You don’t kidnap a member of the Vegas PD and get away with it.” Brass stated dryly.

“If we don’t find him alive I see a lethal injection in your future. That is if Nick here doesn’t kill you first.”

br /> “Tell me where he is. Now!” Nick demanded. He could tell Gibson was starting to get scared. “Tell me.” He repeated.

br /> “There’s an old cellar out back. He’s in there.”

br /> “We didn’t find any cellar.” Warrick stated.

br /> Gibson rolled his eyes. “That’s cause it is hidden. There is a car parked over the door.”

br /> Nick shoved the man back in the chair and ran out the door. Nick entered the backyard and stopped cold. There were ten old cars parked there. He hollered for Brass to bring Gibson out.

br /> “Which one?” Nick glared as Gibson came into view.

 “It’s the red Chevy.”

br /> “Keys.”

br /> Gibson shrugged.  “I threw them down somewhere in the house”

br /> Nick was getting angrier by the minute. Searching for the keys would take forever.

br /> “Nicky, we can just push it.” Warrick yelled.

br /> Nick nodded and then said to Brass, “Get him out of my sight.”

br /> Warrick, Greg and Nick pushed the car out of the way. Nick pulled the cellar door open and raced down the steps. The others were right behind him.

“David! Where are you? Please answer me, Dave.” Nick pulled out his flashlight and started searching. He was beginning to think Gibson had lied. But then he saw something over in the very corner of the cellar.

Nick felt like a vise was squeezing his heart the closer he got. “David?” Oh god, he’s not moving. Nick fell to his knees and gently felt for a pulse. It was weak but it was there.  “Get the paramedics.” he shouted.

br /> “David, I’m here. Hang on for me, baby.” Nick cried. “You’re safe now. I won’t let anybody hurt you ever again. Dave, can you hear me? I love you. Please hang on.” He held David’s hand as he surveyed the mangled body. God, he was going to kill that bastard for this.

br /> Nick heard the sirens. “Hear that, Dave?” He kept talking even though he thought David was unconscious. “The paramedics are coming. Everything’s going to be alright. You just got to hang on a little while longer.”

br /> Suddenly Nick felt pressure on his hand and realized that David was squeezing it. “Hey baby. Can you hear me?” Another squeeze. “I know you’re hurting but you’re safe now, I promise. I love you, Dave.”

br /> Nick started to move so the paramedics could work. But David wouldn’t let go of his hand. “Baby, believe me, I don’t want to let go but the paramedics need me to move so they can help you. I’ll be right here. I promise I’m not going to leave you.” David finally let go of his hand.

br /> Nick stood helplessly watching the medics work. It was bad; he knew it without having to listen to what they were saying. He promised David he wouldn’t leave but it took all his willpower not to go find Gibson and tear him apart with his bare hands.

After what seemed like an eternity to Nick, they were on their way to Desert Palms. He sat beside David in the ambulance, holding his hand and praying they would get to the hospital before it was too late.

Nick stood up as the doctor approached.

br /> “Mr. Stokes, I’m Dr. Richards” she said as they shook hands.

br /> “How is he?”

br /> "Mr. Hodges has multiple lacerations, four broken ribs, a bruised kidney, head trauma, a broken arm and two broken fingers. What concerns us most  though is that he is bleeding internal. We are prepping him for surgery now.”

br /> “Surgery? Is he strong enough for that?” Nick remembered how weak his pulse was.

br /> “I’ll be honest Mr. Stokes; I’d rather wait till he was stronger.”

br /> “But?”

br /> “If we don’t stop the bleeding Mr. Hodges won’t survive the night.” she stated grimly as a nurse walked up to them.

br /> Nick just stared. Suddenly everything seemed unreal. His vision was blurred from the tears he had been trying to hold back. The room was spinning and his legs were weak. He was leaning up against someone to keep from falling.

br /> “Nicky, I think you better sit.” Warrick started leading him towards a chair.

br /> Oh good, he was leaning on Rick. He thought maybe he was leaning against that pretty nurse. David would kill him.

br /> “Mr. Stokes, we need you to sign the consent form for the surgery.” the nurse said.

br /> “Huh?”  Nick asked in a daze.

br /> “According to Mr. Hodges records, you have power of attorney in medical emergencies.”

br /> Yeah he remembered when they did that. “Where do I sign?”

br /> *******

br /> Nick glanced around at the people in the waiting room. Sitting across from him was Greg, next to him was Archie and Ronnie. Brass, Catherine, Mia and Bobby were on Greg’s other side. Warrick and Jacqu sat on either side of Nick. Sara and Grissom were standing looking out the window. Nick wished David could see how concerned they all were for him.  Of course, he would just say they were there for Nick not him. Nick shook his head. He was really going to have to work on the man’s self esteem.

br /> He saw a nurse approaching with a bag. “Excuse me, Mr. Stokes. The doctor thought you might want to hang onto Mr. Hodges’ things.”

br /> “Thank you.” he mumbled as he took the bag. He sat down and emptied the bag. It wasn’t much really, David’s wallet, a cross his nieces sent him and his watch. Nick picked it up and examined it. He started laughing, almost hysterically.   David had cuts, bruises and broken bones but somehow the watch was still ticking. “It doesn’t even have a scratch on it.” he said holding it up.

br /> Nick realized his friends were staring at him the same way they were when he told them about his dream. They think I’ve finally gone over the edge. Who knows maybe I have, he thought.

br /> Jacqui put her hand on his arm. “That watch means a lot to him.”

br /> Nick just nodded his head and clutched it tightly in his hand. He would put it back on David’s wrist as soon as he saw him.

br /> He leaned back in the chair and closed his eyes. His mother had told him once that he should think happy thoughts whenever he was worried or afraid. He had never really known it to work but he figured it couldn’t hurt to try.

Nick walked up behind him and put his arms around him. “What are you thinking?”

“That’s an obnoxious question. David turned to face him. “If I wanted anybody to know what I was thinking, I would have verbalized it.”

Nick laughed. “Didn’t mean to offend you. Besides I’m not just anybody.”

“Oh I forgot you’re super CSI Nick Stokes, golden boy of the
Clark County Crime Lab.”

“I thought I was your boyfriend.”

“Boyfriend? Really Nick, you are a man not a boy. I should know.”

Nick chuckled. “Are you going to pick on everything I say tonight?”

“Probably.” David smirked. “Maybe you should just shut up and kiss me.”

“You’ll probably complain about that too.”

“Trust me, there’s not a damn thing wrong with the way you kiss.”

Nick grinned and pulled him into a long, slow kiss. They had been dating almost four months. Nick knew David hid his emotions from everyone so he was surprised at what David said next.

“Nicky, do you really want to know what I was thinking?”

“Of course, Dave. If you want to tell me.”

“I was thinking that I, um, shit I’m not good at this.”

Nick held him tighter and whispered “Whatever it is baby, you can tell me.”

David moved so that he was looking straight into the other man’s eyes. “I love you, Nicky.”

Nick just stood there, staring into those beautiful blue eyes and grinning like a madman. As he saw a flicker of doubt cross David’s face, he realized he hadn’t said anything. He ran his hand through the other man’s hair. “Baby, you don’t know how happy you’ve made me. I love so much.”

br /> Warrick cleared his throat. “Um, Nick, please tell me you didn’t just say you love me.”

br /> Nick’s eyes flew open. He didn’t realize he had spoken out loud. “Sorry, Rick.” He blushed. “I was thinking about David.”

br /> He felt more relaxed then he had since this whole thing started. Guess there is something to this thinking happy thoughts business. He’d have to call his mom and thank her. On second thought, she would want to know what exactly he thought about. He could just imagine. I thought about the first time my boyfriend told me he loved me. Yeah, that would go over good, considering his family didn’t have a clue that he was gay. He should tell them, he decided. He wanted to show David where he grew up and introduce him to his family. David always said it didn’t bother him that they didn’t know, they won’t like him anyway. Nick would probably have to drag him kicking and screaming to Texas.

br /> *******

br /> Nick jumped up when he saw the doctor. He couldn’t tell anything from her expression.

br /> “How is he?” he asked anxiously.

br /> “He’s stable for now. We managed to stop the bleeding. The next twenty four hours are critical.” she stated. “The extent of his other injuries will complicate his recovery.”

br /> Jacqui  had got up and was standing beside Nick. “What do you mean by complicate? she asked.

br /> “As you know, Mr. Hodges suffered some head trauma. Once he is stronger, we will do tests to determine if there’s any permanent damage.”

br /> “You mean brain damage?” Nick felt like he was going to be sick.

br /> “It is a possibility, yes.” She answered softly.

br /> “I want to see him.” Nick demanded.

br /> “Of course, the nurse will come and get you as soon as he is settled.”

br /> “How long before he wakes up?”

br /> “I’m afraid that’s hard to tell.” Dr. Richards hesitated. “It could be hours or days or…”

br /> “Are you saying he might not ever wake up?”

br /> “Yes, I’m afraid so.”

br /> Nick let himself be guided back to the chair. He was completely numb. David, his David, might never wake up and if he did he could have brain damage. God, this can’t be happening.

br /> ********

Nick braced himself as he walked into the room. David had looked horrible in the cellar and Nick knew that he would only look worse now in the well lit room. He was right. He’d seen people who were beaten to death look better than David.

br /> “Hi baby. I brought you something.” Nick said as he gently slid the watch onto David’s wrist. “There that’s better. It’s back where it belongs.”

br /> He sat there holding David’s hand. He let the tears flow as he continued talking to his lover. “I love you. You should see all the people outside worrying about you. The whole graveyard shift.  Oh Dave, why didn’t you tell me about Gibson’s call? Why do you always think you have to handle things by yourself?  We could have faced this together.”

br /> Nick wiped the tears from his face. “I guess it sounds like I’m angry at you but I’m not. I just want you to wake up. I miss you so much.” He was suddenly so tired he had to lay his head on the bed.

br /> Nick woke up when the nurse came in to check David’s vitals. She smiled and told him he should go home and get some rest. He just shook his head. He wasn’t leaving till David did.

br /> ********

br /> It had been nine hours since David had came out of surgery. Nick hadn’t left his side. He was staring at the sterile white walls thinking how boring they were. A few years ago, he’d visited his nephew in a children’s hospital. The walls were painted bright colors and there were Disney pictures all over. That’s what this room needed, bright colors and pictures. He started laughing as he pictured David waking up to a picture of Bambi hanging in his room.

br /> “I’m lying here dying and you’re laughing?”

Nick jerked his head up. “David!”

“Nicky.” David started to reach up and touch Nick’s face. Instead a wave of pain hit him and he grimaced.

br /> “Dave baby, don’t try to move that arm. It’s broken along with two of your fingers.” Nick wanted to hug him but was afraid he would hurt him so he finally just kissed him on the forehead. “I was so scared, Dave. I don’t know what I’d do without you. I love you so much.” He knew he was rambling but he couldn’t stop. “Gibson really did a number on you. I guess I don’t really have to tell you that. You’ve got four broken ribs, a bruised kidney, you were bleeding internally. They even thought you might have brain damage. The doctor said you might never wake…”

br /> “Nick.” David interrupted “Relax, I’m going to be fine.”

br /> “Yeah, you are.” Nick smiled. “I should go get the doctor.”

br /> “No, stay.”

br /> Nick nodded and leaned up and pushed the call button.

br /> “May I help you?” a voice inquired.

br /> “Yes, Mr. Hodges is awake. I thought the doctor might want to know.”

br /> “Thank you, I will tell her.”

br /> “Is there anything I can get for you, baby?"

br /> “Thirsty.”

br /> Nick reached over and poured water in a cup and then helped David sip it. “Better?”

br /> “Nick, thank you.”

br /> “Well, it was really hard pouring that water.” Nick teased.

br /> David tried to roll his eyes. Bad idea. He had a feeling he wouldn’t be able to move an inch without something hurting.

br /> “Are you ok? Maybe you shouldn’t talk, just rest.”

br /> “Thank you for finding me.” David mumbled. “I knew you would.”

br /> Nick wasn’t sure what to say. He had the feeling that if he said anything he’d start babbling again. Luckily they were both saved from that by the door opening.

br /> “Hello, Mr. Hodges. I’m Dr. Richards. It is good to see you awake.”

br /> David felt Nick’s hold on his hand get tighter the moment the doctor walked in. It was as if he was afraid she would tell him that David wasn’t going to be alright. David didn’t even glance at her. Instead he was staring at his lover, really noticing for the first time the way he looked. His eyes were bloodshot and puffy. His clothes were way too wrinkled. He looked like he hadn’t slept in days and his right hand was bandaged up.

br /> “Mr. Hodges?” the doctor repeated.

br /> “Yeah what?” David finally looked at her.

br /> “I need to ask you a few questions”

br /> He waited impatiently for her to continue.

br /> “Could you tell me your name?”

br /> “Isn’t it on that chart?” David said pointed to the clipboard she was holding.

br /> “Dave, just answer Dr. Richards questions.” Nick sighed.

br /> “Fine. David Hodges. Do I get a prize now?” David asked sarcastically.

br /> “What is your occupation?”

”Apparently a human punching bag.”

br /> “Do you know where you are?”

br /> “ Desert Palms Hospital. At least that’s what it says on that water pitcher.”

br /> “Do you know the year?”

br /> “Yeah 1984. Hey, does that TV get MTV. I’m dying to see Van Halen’s new video.”

br /> Nick could tell the doctor was wavering between concern and irritation. “Would you try to be serious, David?”

br /> “2006. And before you ask I don’t know what day it is. I’ve kind of got my days mixed up.”

br /> “Do you know this man?” she pointed towards Nick.

br /> “Do you think I’d let a complete stranger hold my hand? No, I wouldn’t. No matter how good looking he is.” David tried to roll his eyes again. “Name’s Nick Stokes and he’s mine. So hands off, doc.”

br /> “David!”

br /> “It’s ok, Mr. Stokes. Some people with head trauma suffer personality changes.” Dr. Richards assured him. We will run some tests to see how extent the damage is.”

br /> “What?” David almost shouted.

br /> Nick didn’t know which was funnier; her thinking David was brain damage or the look on the other man’s face.

br /> “This is the way he is most of the time.” Nick chuckled.

br /> “You mean he’s normally like this?” she said in disbelief. “And it doesn’t bother you?”

br /> “Sure, sometimes but most of the time I think it’s endearing.” Nick heard David making gagging sounds.

br /> “Well, we will still run some tests. I’ll be back to see you tomorrow, Mr. Hodges.”

br /> “I can hardly wait.” David muttered.

br /> As soon as she was out the door, Nick glared at his lover. “Did you have to act like that?”

br /> “What did I do?" David asked innocently. “By the way, I want a new doctor.”

br /> “What? David she saved your life.”

br /> “She thinks I’m brain damaged.”

br /> “Well… that would explain a lot.” Nick teased.

br /> “Hey. I was just being myself.”

br /> “I know I know, but give Dr. Richards a break, she’s never had the David Hodges Experience before.”

br /> “Alright but I have two things to say.” David winced as he tried to move closer to Nick.

br /> “Just two? And be still.” Nick ordered.

br /> David ignored him. “Number one, I meant what I said, hands off that doctor, you’re mine."

br /> Nick laughed. “Just a bit jealous, aren’t you?”

br /> “She is very pretty and I’m no prize especially now with all these bruises.”

br /> Nick stared at the man. “You’re serious? Stop talking about yourself that way. Baby, you’re the only person I want to be with. You’re perfect to me. I love you.”

br /> “I love you too, Nicky.”

br /> Neither man said anything, just tightened their hold on each other. Finally, Nick broke the silence.

“What was the other thing?”

br /> “Huh?”

br /> “You said you had two things to say.”

br /> “Oh that. If you ever say I’m endearing again, you will be the one in the hospital bed.” David yawned.

br /> “Looks like the meds are kicking in. Go to sleep, baby.”

br /> “Nick, you’ll stay, won’t you?” David knew he should insist that Nick go home and sleep, but he wasn’t ready to let him go.

br /> “Nothing could move me from this spot.” Nick smiled.

br /> David smiled back and closed his eyes. He mumbled something as he drifted off to sleep. Nick wasn’t sure but it sounded like "never want you to go."

br /> **********

br /> Nick was trying desperately to get David to wake up. He could tell the other man was having a nightmare. He was moaning and thrashing around in the bed. Nick was afraid he was going to injure himself if he didn’t stop.

br /> “David wake up, please. You’re safe.”

br /> Suddenly David sat up and started trying to hit Nick with his good hand.

br /> “Dave, stop. It’s me, Nick.” he said as he caught David’s hand.

br /> “Nick? Thank god you’re here.” David leaned against him.

br /> “I got you, baby. You’re safe now.  Gibson can’t hurt you anymore.” Nick kept repeating, trying to calm David down.

br /> David sighed and laid his head on Nick’s shoulder. “You must think I’m being stupid.”

br /> “No, I think you’ve been through hell. Anybody would have nightmares. You want to talk about it?”

br /> “No.”

br /> “I think you should lay back down now.”

br /> David just tightened his good arm around Nick. “In a minute.”

br /> ********

br /> David’s tests all came back normal. Dr. Richards said he would be fine once his broken bones healed. Nick had overheard a couple of nurses talking. Apparently, the doctor had the results triple checked, not convinced he hadn’t suffered any brain damage. Nick just laughed and decided he wouldn’t tell David.

br /> David watched as Nick argued with someone on the phone. He couldn’t tell what was being said but he could tell that the man was unhappy. Finally, Nick snapped his phone shut.

br /> “What’s wrong?  Did Grissom tell you to come back to work?” David was hoping that wasn’t it. He needed Nick with him. He knew he was being silly.

br /> “No.” Nick frowned. “Catherine and Warrick are on there way here.”

br /> Ok, now David was confused. “You don’t want to see them?”

br /> “That’s not it”. Nick sighed. "They are coming to take your statement. I tried convincing Grissom that you weren’t well enough yet, but he’s talked to your doctor.”

br /> “I told you we should get another doctor.” David smirked. “Come on Nicky, I'm fine. Don’t you think you’re being a little overprotective?”

br /> “I know you don’t want to talk about…”

br /> “But I have too. You know that. I can’t let Gibson get away with this.”

br /> “I know.” Nick mumbled as there was a knock on the door.

br /> “Hi guys. How you doing, David?” Catherine smiled as she walked into the room, Warrick right behind her.

br /> “Wonderful.” David answered.

br /> “Well, you’re looking better then the last time we saw you.” Warrick said.

br /> “Thanks.”

br /> “I really don’t think David’s up for this.” Nick tried once more.

br /> “Nick, I’m fine. Let’s just get this done.”

br /> “Can you tell us what happened?” Catherine asked.

br /> “I was driving home after working a double shift. A car came up beside me and ran me off the road. I guess I was too tired to think clearly. I got out of my car before I realized it was Henry Gibson, my ex brother-in-law. I asked him what the hell he was doing. He grabbed me and told me I was going to tell him where they were.”

br /> “They?”

br /> “My sister, Becca, and their two daughters. I told him I’d never tell him. That’s when he shoved me. I remember falling into the car door and the sound of glass breaking.” David paused to take a drink of water. “The next thing I remember is waking up in that cellar. He was pacing back and forth, apparently waiting for me to come too. Once he realized I had, he pulled me up and started hitting me, demanding I tell him where they were.” David glanced at Nick. He had his jaw clenched so tight David thought it might break. “Nick, why don’t you go get some coffee?”

br /> Nick just shook his head as they all looked at him. David sighed and continued.

br /> “Everything that happened after that is a blur. I know he would leave me alone for a while then come back and start again. I guess at some point he got tired of holding me up and just started kicking me. Next thing I remember Gibson was shoving a phone up to my face and telling me to talk to Nick. Obviously he didn’t like what I said cause he hit me again. After a while he left. The next thing I know, Nick is yelling my name and telling me I'm safe.” He looked at Nick and smiled.

br /> “We know Gibson called you. Did he threaten you?” Warrick asked.

br /> David felt Nick tense up even more at the question. “Yes, he did but I didn’t take it seriously.”

br /> “Why didn’t you tell me?” Nick asked calmly, too calmly David thought.

br /> “Like I said I didn’t take it seriously. But you would have. I just didn’t want you to worry.”

br /> “That worked well.” Nick said sarcastically. “And if you didn’t take him seriously, why did you insist we ride to work together that night? What about the way you were acting before I left the lab?”

br /> “Fine, maybe I was a little worried. As for the lab, I just had a bad feeling when you started to leave. But I swear Nick, I didn’t think Gibson would do something like this.”

br /> “How long have you worked in law enforcement?”  Nick glared. “You should know the kinds of things people are capable of.”

br /> Warrick and Catherine exchanged looks. This was rapidly turning into a lover’s quarrel.

br /> “Is there anything else you want to tell us, David?” Warrick interrupted whatever the other man was about to say.

br /> “No, that’s really all I can remember.”

br /> “Ok then, we should go and let you get some rest.” Catherine said, closing her notebook.

br /> “Hurry up and get better. We miss you at work. Bye guys”

br /> “Take it easy, man.” Warrick said as they headed out the door. “You too, Nicky.”

br /> Nick silently watched the door close behind them.

br /> “You’re mad, aren’t you? David asked.

br /> “Of course I’m mad. The bastard almost beat you to death!” Nick shouted.

br /> “I’m sorry. I should have told you. I just didn’t think it was important.”

br /> “Not important? David, he threatened you.”

br /> “Do you tell me every time you are threatened?”

br /> “That’s different.”

br /> “How?”

br /> “It’s part of my job. I’m trained to deal with threats.”

br /> “Oh, since I’m a lowly lab rat I can’t protect myself. Is that what you’re saying?”

br /> “Well, look at yourself.”

br /> “Get out!” David ordered.

br /> “What?”

br /> “You heard me. Do I have to call somebody to remove you?”

br /> Nick stared at the other man. He couldn’t believe he was throwing him out. “Fine. If that’s what you want.”

br /> David watched as Nick started out the door. What are you doing? he thought. “Nick, wait. Don’t go, please.”

br /> Nick slowly turned. “Make up your mind.”

br /> “I'm sorry for everything." David frowned. “Stay”?

br /> Nick walked over and embraced him. “I’m sorry too, baby. That comment was out of line. I’m not really mad at you. I’m just tired.”

br /> “When was the last time you slept?" David asked.

br /> “I’ve gotten a few hours here and there."

br /> “You look awful.”

br /> Nick grinned. “This coming from the man that looks like one big bruise.”

br /> “Funny. You should go home and sleep for a day or so.”

br /> Nick chuckled. “You just told me to stay.”

br /> “I know but I don’t want you ending up in the hospital too.”

br /> “I’m fine, Dave. Just so you know I’m not leaving this hospital till you do.”

br /> “Nicky, what about work?”

br /> “I’m taking vacation time.”

br /> “But you were saving your days to go to Texas this fall.”

br /> “I can trade days with Greg or Sara when the time comes. You’re more important; don’t you know that?”

br /> David swallowed. The only people he’d ever mattered to was his family. He wasn’t sure what to say.

br /> Nick laughed. “I can’t believe it. You’re speechless. Not even a sarcastic remark, Dave?”

br /> David sighed. “Are you going to tell me what you did to your hand?”

br /> Nick wasn’t surprised at the sudden change of subject. David did that when he didn’t know what to say.

“Oh that, I put my fist though a wall.”

br /> “You put a hole in our wall?”

br /> “No, calm down. It happened at work.”

br /> “At the lab? Tell me you didn’t punch out a glass wall.”

br /> “Should I lie then?”

br /> “My god Nick, you could have done some serious damage. Did a doctor look at it?”

br /> “No, it wasn’t that bad. Jacqui bandaged it for me.”

br /> “I knew you were competitive Nick, but really.”

br /> “What do you mean?”

”I get my head shoved through a window so you have to put your hand through a glass wall.” David teased.

br /> “Very funny.”

br /> “Dave?”

br /> “Yeah”

br /> “Promise me if you ever threatened again you’ll tell me.”

br /> David yawned. “I promise, babe. Love you.”

“Love you too.”

“You’re doing great, Mr. Hodges.” The nurse smiled as she took his blood pressure. “You should be able to go home in a few days.”

br /> “Can’t be soon enough.” David grumbled.

br /> Nick was sitting in a chair, watching the interaction. He loved this nurse. Her name was Sally and she was the only person at the hospital that wasn’t put off by David no matter what he said. And he’d uttered some pretty biting remarks just to see if he could get her riled up.

“Well, all done here.” She grinned. “The aide will be here shortly to give you your sponge bath.”

br /> “My what?” David choked out.

br /> “Your sponge bath, Mr. Hodges.”

br /> “But that’s not necessary. I can stand. I will take a shower.”

br /> “Oh, you can’t shower yet. Your wounds are still healing and it wouldn’t be wise to get them wet.” With that Sally was out the door.

br /> David looked horrified. “Nick, did you hear that? A sponge bath.”

br /> Nick chuckled. “Dave, it’s not that big a deal. Maybe you’ll get some pretty young aide.”

br /> “That may be your fantasy, Stokes but it’s not mine. Lord, she’ll probably be one of those annoying, cheerful, talkative people.”

br /> “Oh poor baby.”

br /> “Hey, I know. You can give me the sponge bath.” David suggested.

br /> “There’s no way, Dave.”

br /> “Come on, Nicky. I’ll do whatever you want.”

br /> “No.”

br /> “Fine. Just remember that when I die from humiliation, it was your fault.” David pouted.

br /> Nick shook his head. “I’m sure you’ll survive.”

br /> David was about to argue more but the door opened and in stepped the aide. Nick and David both stared, gaping. The aide was gorgeous, blonde hair, blue eyes and great build.

br /> “Hello, Mr. Hodges. I’m Tommy. Ready for your sponge bath?”

br /> “Sure.” David managed to say.

br /> Nurse Sally appeared in the doorway. “Tommy, would you help me with Mr. Lee before you start the bath?”

br /> “Sure thing, Sal. Be right back, Mr. Hodges.”

br /> “I’ll be here. And you can call me David.”

br /> Nick glared at the man in the bed. “He is not giving you a sponge bath.”

br /> David smirked. “You had your chance, babe.”

br /> “I mean it, Dave. When he comes back, we’re asking for another aide.”

br /> “No, we’re not. Stop being silly. Although you are kind of sexy when you’re jealous.”

br /> “Did you see him? He’s gorgeous.”

br /> “Yeah but that’s not my type.”

br /> “Hey! Thanks a lot.”

br /> David laughed. “That’s not what I meant. I meant that blonde, blue eyed men aren’t my type. I like brunettes with brown eyes.”

br /> “Well, I don’t like it. I’m going to stay.”

br /> “What? Nick, you are not going to watch me get a sponge bath.”

br /> “But look at you, you are practically helpless. What if he tries to take advantage of you?”

br /> “First, I am not helpless. Second, he wouldn’t have to take advantage of me” David teased.

br /> “David Hodges!”

br /> “Come on, Nicky, you know I’m kidding.”

br /> “Yeah well, the next time I’m in the hospital, Tommy’s giving me a sponge bath too.”

br /> “I think he will have mysteriously disappeared by then.”

br /> Tommy walked back in the room. “Sorry David, I didn’t mean to keep you waiting. He looked at Nick. “Sir, would you mind stepping out until we’re done?”

br /> “Yes. I mean, I’ll be right outside, Dave.”

br /> David just laughed as Nick sulked out of the room.

br /> ********

br /> David tired his best to get Nick to go home but he refused. The only time he would even leave the room is when someone was visiting. Everyone from the graveyard shift had come by. Between all the stories they told David, he felt like he’d been with Nick during the kidnapping. He heard about Nick having nightmares, how he refused to sleep, his guilt, the outburst in the break room, the lab coat and almost hitting Greg. It hurt just to think about how much pain Nick had been in. David was so thankful Nick had had their friends there to help him.

br /> Nick was sitting on the bed with David watching the local news.

br /> “Nick, I need to ask you something.”

br /> “Sure, Dave.” Nick picked up the remote and turned off the TV. “What is it?”

br /> “Am I dying? Be honest, please.”

br /> “No, you aren’t dying.” Nick was shocked. “Why would you think that?”

br /> “Well, I’ve noticed that everyone is calling me David now instead of Hodges, even Warrick and Brass.”

br /> Nick laughed. “David, I thought you wanted them to call you that.”

br /> “I do, it’s just weird. Why are they doing it now?”

br /> “Look, I know it has always bothered you that they call you Hodges and all the other techs by their first name. So does Jacqui. When you were missing, if someone referred to you as Hodges, well, let’s just say they didn’t do it again around either of us.”

br /> “Thank you. What did I ever do to deserve a man like you?”

br /> “I think you’ve got that backwards, baby.” Nick sighed. “I’m so glad I have you.”

br /> They sit in silence for a moment. Just enjoying being together.

br /> “I bet you looked really sexy in my lab coat.” David grinned.

br /> “You’ve seen me in a lab coat before.”

br /> “True, but not mine.”

br /> “They all look the same.”

br /> “So what was so special about mine that calmed you down?”

br /> “Did they tell you everything?” Nick sighed. “If you must know it smelled like you.”

br /> “Should I be offended by that?”

br /> Nick chuckled. “No baby, I love your smell.”

br /> “That makes it better.” David rolled his eyes.

br /> Nick was suddenly serious. "It helped me."

br /> “I know, Nicky.” David looked at the other man. “It wasn’t your fault, Nick.”

br /> “I should have let you wait for me. I’m so sorry.”

br /> “You have nothing to apologize for. You didn’t do anything wrong." David wiped away the tear on Nick’s check. “I want you to stop thinking you did.”

br /> ***********

br /> Nick was driving David crazy. They were on their way home from the hospital. Nick kept asking if he was ok. He was driving 20 mph. When David asked him why, he said so he wouldn’t hit the potholes so hard. David was trying hard not to show he was in pain, it would only make Nick drive slower. David just wanted to get home, the faster the better. Finally they pulled into their driveway. Nick jumped out and opened the door for David.

br /> “Dave, are you sure you’re ok to walk?”

br /> “Yes Nick.”

br /> “Are you sure? I could carry you.”

br /> David couldn’t take it anymore. “Nick, I am perfectly capable of walking from the truck to the house. Would you please stop fussing over me so much? You’re driving me insane.”

br /> “Sorry” Nick mumbled.

br /> Damn. He’s done so much for you in the past few days and what do you do, hurt his feelings. Brilliant David, he thought to himself.

br /> “Nicky, I know you are worried and that you’re trying to help. I guess I’m just not used to needing help. I love you for it though.”

br /> Nick smiled. “I guess I have been a bit of a pain, huh?

br /> “Yeah, but you’re my pain so I don’t mind.”

br /> Nick opened the door and David walked in. He turned and put his arm around his lover. “God, it is good to be home. I hate the hospital. Well, except for those sponge baths.”

br /> “Don’t even start, David.”

br /> “Are you going to give me sponge baths now or should I call Tommy?” David asked.

br /> “The doctor said you can take a shower now, all by yourself.”

br /> “Where’s the fun in that?” David pouted.

br /> “No fun for you until your ribs heal.”

br /> “But I want to have fun now.”

br /> “Sorry baby.”

br /> David looked around. “Nick, someone’s been here.”

br /> “Greg was here. Remember he brought me some clothes and stuff.”

br /> “But look, the place is spotless. I seem to recall you had books scattered on the coffee table last time we were here.”

br /> “Maybe Greg did it?” Nick suggested. They both laughed at the thought. They had been to Greg’s place. It always looked like a tornado came through. Greg hated cleaning.

Nick went into the kitchen to get a glass of water so David could take his medicine. As he was walking back to the couch he saw a note laying on the end table. “Hey Dave, listen to this.”

Hi guys. Welcome home. Jacqui knew a dirty house would drive David crazy so we decide to do a little cleaning. We also cleaned your fridge and dumped all the spoiled food. But don’t worry, we restocked it. Take care and get lots of rest.

Love,

Catherine, Jacqui, Sara, Mia and Lindsay

P.S. Everyone at the lab pitched in for the food.

br /> “We sure have great friends, don't we?"

br /> David nodded.

br /> “Hey you ok?” Nick noticed that David was paler then before.

br /> “I think I’ve been up to long.”

br /> “Let’s get you to bed then.” Nick held out his hand and helped him up.

br /> David leaned against Nick and let him help him into the bedroom. Nick started undressing the other man.

br /> “This is so humiliating. I can’t even undress myself.” David groaned.

br /> “It’s not like I haven’t done this before.”

br /> “You’ve never had to do it though.”

br /> “David, just get in the bed.”

br /> “Hmm, looks like they even changed the sheets. I hope they didn’t have Lindsay do it. Last time I changed them I found one of your condoms. Really Nick, you should be more careful where you throw them.”

br /> “That wasn’t mine, it was yours.”

br /> “Sure, whatever you say pretty boy.”

br /> Nick gave up. “Are you comfortable? Is there anything you need?”

br /> “I’m good. It feels great to be in our bed.”

br /> “Goodnight baby. Nick kissed him. “I’ll be in the living room if you need me.”

br /> “Wait. You’re not staying?” David asked in disbelief.

br /> “No, you’re still healing. I’m afraid I might hurt you while I’m sleeping. I’ll sleep on the couch.”

br /> “You most certainly will not. You haven’t had a decent night’s sleep since before I was kidnapped. You are sleeping in this bed.” David insisted.

br /> “But Dave”

br /> David held out his hand. “Nicky, I need to feel you beside me."

br /> Nick took David’s hand and kissed it. Then he stripped down to his boxers and got in the bed. He gently put his arm around David and they both fall  into a deep, peaceful sleep.
