Title: Some Investigator
By: juneprota
Pairing: Greg/Warrick
Rating: PG
Summary: Short Drabble. Nick notices something different about his best two friends.

Nick knows something is going on. He just can't quite place his finger on what it is. Both of his friends have been acting kind of strange. Although, in all honesty it's sometimes hard to tell with Rick. The guy's got his poker face down so good, he could've been an actor in another life. With Rick, you have to pay attention to the small things. He doesn't have the obvious tells - flickering of the eyes, tapping of the fingers, straightening of the collar. No, Rick's too good to get caught with any of those.

Rick's big tell is his speech. Rick's a slow speaker. It's not slow like Nick's when he's had a few and his Texan starts to show. No, Rick's speech is full of pauses, as if he's giving consideration to everything he's going to say before he says it. The only time the pauses disappear is when he's angry, cocky, drunk, or has a prepared answer for an expected question.

Nick thinks back on the last conversation with his friend.

Are you seeing anyone new yet?

Yeah, I've been dating someone for a couple weeks now.

It serious yet?

Not yet.

What does she look like?

Tall, blond hair, brown eyes.

No pauses. Direct responses. He’d rehearsed.

Greg on the other hand is an open book and knows it. When Greg has something to hide, he avoids people. Nick hasn't seen his friend outside of work in weeks. And their recent conversations at work have been completely professional.

Nick doesn’t put two and two together until he sees Greg and Warrick in the lab. Greg’s sitting on a stool. Warrick’s standing behind him and leaning over his shoulder to look at a piece of evidence. Nick walks into the lab room. “You two are dating.”

Of course, Warrick doesn’t look surprised at being found out. “And you call yourself an investigator.” He straightens up and looks to Greg. “I’ve gotta go talk to Gris. I’ll see you later.”

Greg calls after Warrick. “Thanks for abandoning me!”

“How long?”

Greg ducks his head and pretends to straighten a stack of papers. “A month this Friday.”

“Shit.”

Greg actually looks apologetic. “We were going to tell you this weekend. We just needed a little time to get our bearings, you know.”

“Yeah, man, I understand.” And Nick does, because while it's a complete shock to him that Warrick and Greg are dating, he's sure it's an even bigger shock to Warrick and Greg.

XXXXXXXXXX

After a few days of quiet observation, Nick thinks he finally has his mind wrapped around the concept of his two best friends dating. He just can’t believe he didn’t figure it out sooner. They’re so obviously a couple. They’re sitting on bar stools right now, turned slightly toward each other, legs almost touching. Nick rolls his eyes and mumbles under his breath before taking a sip of beer, “some investigator I am.”
