It was one of those things that happen to couples at times. Nick and Greg never thought it would happen to them, but it did. They started to drift apart, and when they realized what was happening, it was too late. There were no horrible arguments, no screaming matches, nothing like that. Just a semi-calm discussion one rainy afternoon and it was done.

Until he could find a place, Greg stayed with friends. Work wasn't hard because Greg was working day shift while Nick was still on nights. Greg still found himself watching for Nick to arrive at shift change, mostly out of habit. He tried to tell himself that Nick wasn't his responsibility anymore. That still didn't keep him from thinking of Nick from time to time.

Greg finally got his own place and settled in. He started going to some of the clubs looking for a good time. IN time, he met a guy named Curt and they began dating. Even with his new friend, Greg still thought about Nick and often wondered if what they'd had could have been saved. Greg decided to see if Nick would talk to him about it.

It took some doing, but Greg finally got the nerve up to ask Nick if they could get together and talk. Nick was a bit hesitant at first but finally agreed. Greg gave Nick his new address and they agreed to meet on a day off.

Greg's relationship with Curt was progressing, just not at the pace Curt wanted it to. He'd tried to talk to Greg about it, but Greg dismissed it by saying he didn't want to rush things. Curt accepted that, but didn't like it too much.

On the appointed day, Nick knocked on Greg's door. Greg let him in and offered him some coffee. They sat in Greg's kitchen drinking their coffee when Nick decided to get to the point.....

"So what did you want to talk about, Greg?"

"Well, I'll tell you, Nick.....I've been thinking a lot about us and what happened, and I've been wondering if maybe we couldn't have saved it somehow....."

"I don't know if we could have salvaged anything or not."

"You really don't think so?"

"No, I really don't. Do you think we could have made it?"

"I don't know, Nick. That's why I wanted to see what you thought."

"Are you trying to ask me about giving things another try, Greg?"

"I thought about it....."

Nick sat there thinking about what Greg had just told him..... "I don't think so, Greg. I'm thinking things would just end up like they were at the end up like they did before. I'm sorry if that hurt you, but that's just how I feel." Nick got up from the table and left the apartment. Greg sat at the table for a while and then decided to call Curt. They made arrangements to go out that night. Greg didn't say so to Curt, but he wanted to try and get Nick off his mind for good. Greg and Curt decided to hit a few clubs that night, and were having a fine time. Greg hadn't thought of Nick at all, and it felt pretty good. They decided to do one last club, and while Curt was getting their drinks, Greg spotted Nick at corner table. He was alone, nursing a beer. Greg quickly turned away hoping that Nick didn't see him. Just then, Curt walked up with the drinks. They found a table on the opposite side of the club. Shortly after that, Nick got up to leave. Curt notice that Greg was watching Nick leave and asked, "Who is that?" "Just someone I'd like to forget....."
