Floating. Falling. Into arms. Many arms. Holding him. Coziness. Closeness. Safeness. Forever. Never alone again.
Greg Sanders woke up with a start. I overslept, I knew it. He looked at the clock at the bedside table and realized he was wrong. Enough time to get ready and go to work without the morning becoming chaotic. He yawned and fell back on his pillow.
His first day at the Las Vegas Crime Lab. As a lab tech. As a chemist. He felt his stomach turn into a kind of stone at the thoughts floating through his mind...
It should be a new start. After his breakup with Alan he had left San Francisco and moved here. Well, after Alan´s breakup with him. Greg hoped the distance between them would make it easier to forget Alan. He desperately needed to get over him.
In Las Vegas, Thank God, everything was new to him. The town. The people. The apartment. Work. Enough to forget Alan.
But how would it be, working at the CSI?
The Las Vegas Crime Lab had an excellent reputation. Top people. But that´s what was bothering him. Would he fit in?
It wasn´t such a long time since he had graduated. He only had one year of experience. Greg took a deep breath. Would he fail?
Nonsense, he told himself in the same moment. I´m good at what I do. I won´t fail.
Another look at the clock. Now it was time. He got up, showered quickly, brushed his teeth with ambition - he liked his white teeth - and wasted three minutes picking the right shirt for the day.
The lab was only fifteen minutes away, but Greg worried his car would break down and ruin his first impression. But the old Civic had a good day. He remembered he had to meet the supervisor of the CSI unit first. His name was Captain Brass.
Greg parked his car and went through the main entrance. The security protocol cost him another couple of minutes. But then he was allowed to enter the sanctuary - the lab. Intrigued, he looked around. Wow! They had really fantastic equipment here. The best of the best. He addressed a young woman, who was rushing by: "Excuse me. I´m looking for the office of Captain Brass."
"Down there and then to the left." She rushed on.
"Thank you!" Greg called after her. "Busy people here," he mumbled to himself.
A few moments later he knocked at the door labeled, "Captain Jim Brass".
"Come in," a brisk voice ordered.
"Hello. I´m the new lab tech, Greg Sanders."
"Yes, I´ve been expecting you. Sit down." The new boss gave him a very familiar look.
Almost certainly about his haircut. And his boyish looks. Greg was used to it.
After the instructions about his duties, Captain Brass showed him his workplace and left him alone. Well, not exactly alone. Many technicians were working or moving around. He sat down at his desk, gathering himself. Not for long.
An African-American CSI rushed in, introduced himself as Warrick Brown and gave him some samples. Greg hardly managed to mention his own name before Warrick rushed out again. It seemed there wasn´t much time for a little chat in this lab. He began to test the samples.
Suddenly a very pleasant voice said: "Hi, I´m Nick. Are you the new lab tech?"
Greg turned to him and thought at once: Wow. A good-looking man. Very handsome. "Yes. I´m Greg. Greg Sanders."
"Nick Stokes." He smiled very friendly. "So, how are you on your first day?"
"A little nervous."
"Sure. Who wouldn´t be. You will see, we are all very nice here. Even Captain Brass is okay. For the man who is in charge."
Greg smiled back.
After Nick left, he felt more relaxed. This day had turned out to be a good one. Nick was a very nice and handsome man. But no temptation lay there. He wasn´t Greg´s type. He was quite the opposite of Alan. It still hurt him to think about Alan. They had been together for eight years. Until Alan had found a new love and had lost interest in him. Alan had been his first and only. Greg had been sixteen when they had met. Alan had been ten years older and had had ten more years of experience. Alan had taken his breath away. Greg´s mind was drifting more and more into pleasant memories.
"Already asleep?"
"No! No, I was just thinking," he replied, startled.
A very attractive red-haired woman was grinning at him. "I´m Catherine Willows. Are you the new guy?"
"Yes, I´m Greg Sanders."
"How are you? Are you having a good first day?"
"Yeah. Perfect."
"This is Gil Grissom," Catherine continued and stepped aside.
Only now, Greg noticed the man behind her who was staring at him, looking a little perplexed.
Oh boy! Good-looking. Mature. Confident. Blue eyed. Definitely his type.
He cleared his throat. "Hello."
Grissom mumbled something in response.
Neither Greg nor Catherine could understand it.
Grissom didn´t take his blue, piercing eyes off Greg.
The young lab tech became a little uncomfortable.
In the meantime, Catherine handed him some samples. "Test these, please. As fast as possible. It´s very important."
"No problem. It´s practically done." He grinned brightly.
Grissom´s eyes narrowed. "Let´s go Catherine."
Greg watched them leaving.
"A little too old for you, don´t you think?" someone remarked behind him.
"What?!" He whirled around.
It was Nick. "Well, Catherine. She is a very attractive woman, but..."
"I certainly noticed that. But I´m not here to flirt, only to do my job."
"Oh, got yourself burned," Nick observed in a soft voice.
"Yeah, very badly," Greg admitted.
"However, you were checking Catherine out. Admit it."
Greg´s face turned hot. He knew exactly who he was checking out. Great! My first day and I almost outed myself. "Well, she is an attractive woman and I´m only a man."
Nick grinned amused. "Sure. How old are you?"
"What is that question supposed to mean? I´m way over eighteen, believe it or not."
"All right. Just having a little fun here. Peace." He reached out his hand and Greg took it. They shook hands.
Alone again, Greg sighed. That was close. Be more careful, he told himself. He started to test the new samples.
Warrick Brown came by and took his results. Again, he had no time to stay.
An hour later, Greg finished the testing of the other samples and went looking for Grissom and Catherine. He strolled down one of the hallways, and was just about to turn another corner, when he heard their voices.
They were standing right behind the corner, talking.
"Isn´t he a little bit young to be trusted with this responsibility? He is running some really important stuff."
"Yeah, I know. But you have to give him a chance. Maybe it´s true, he looks like he just graduated from school. Maybe his hairstyle is a bit odd. But that doesn´t say anything about his abilities."
"You may be right." But Grissom didn´t sound convinced.
Quietly, Greg walked back a few steps and kicked deliberately against a trash can.
The voices fell silent at once.
Now he turned the corner.
The CSI´s looked guilty when they recognized him.
"Hi again," he told them and managed to hold his voice in a friendly, cheery tone. "I have your results."
"Already?" Grissom burst out.
Catherine suppressed a laugh.
Grissom scanned the papers, then he looked up. For the first time he addressed Greg directly. "Good work... erhm...."
"My name is Greg, sir."
"Well Greg, don´t call me sir. You can call me Grissom, like everybody else here."
"Very well, Grissom."
Grissom frowned. He was puzzled, because the other man was grinning like...He didn´t know. It was indescribable.
Catherine - looking from one to the other - had to bite her tongue. She forced herself for a second time not to laugh out loud.
Greg still didn´t move and Grissom ordered: "You can go back to your work."
"Thanks - Grissom." He let the name roll over his tongue.
After he had gone Catherine said: "You see. He is a clever boy. I´m certain he will fit right in here."
Grissom didn´t respond.
Catherine was confused. "What´s up, Gil?"
"Huh? Maybe you were right. He is better than I expected. Very fast. And the results look promising." He fell silent again. Just standing on the same spot. Acting moony.
Finally, Catherine touched his arm. "Well let´s go. We have a lot of work to do."
"Exactly," Grissom agreed. "And no time for anything else," he mumbled softly to himself.
"What?"
"Nothing. Just talking to myself."
"Ah, Gil Grissom. Not talking to other people, only to himself."
Grissom glared at her, but she smiled, unimpressed. So he smiled back.
Greg had gone back to his workspace, walking on air...He allowed me to call him Grissom. Like everybody else. On my first day. Wow! That is so great. This day turned out so good. Even perfect. I have nice co-workers. I did a good job on my first challenge. I made a good impression on Grissom. A man, who let me forget about Alan for the first time. That is good, isn´t it? He smiled happily and went on with his work.
Later Nick was visiting his desk again. "I heard you passed your first test."
"Huh? What test? By whom?"
"Catherine told me you were really good."
"I only handed some results over to Grissom and Catherine."
"You ARE new. You impressed the most dreaded of all, Gil Grissom."
"He didn´t seem impressed."
"Certainly, he didn´t show it. But Catherine told me. She has known him longer and better than I have."
"Mmh. Did I really impress him?"
"You can bet on it."
Glowing with joy, Greg rummaged through his papers and asked as casually as he could: "Why is he dreaded?"
"Grissom?" Nick laughed. "Dreaded is a little over the top. He is very ambitious. Accurate. Strict. Obsessed with his work. He always demands the best from himself and from all others."
"I see."
"He is also very much admired."
"Probably it´s his family who suffers most from his obsession with his work."
"He has no family. He lives alone, I think."
Greg´s heart beat faster and he scolded himself. He lives alone. So what? That proves nothing. He certainly has a girlfriend. Or a boyfriend. Or a lover. Men with his looks always have.
"To tell you the truth, his private life is a mystery to all of us. Even to Catherine, who knows him the best," Nick confided to him.
"Well, whatever." Greg´s voice sounded suddenly bored. He pretended to be incurious. "Sorry, but I have to interrupt you. I still have quite a bit of work to do."
"Oh, I see. You just started here and are already totally ambitious. Do you want to compete with Grissom?"
Greg grinned and began to write his notes. On the inside, he was still musing about Grissom. So, he is a workaholic. Obsessed. Well, maybe I know how to win such a man. I will prove I´m as good as he is. Maybe I will even prove I´m better.
