*

She comes to him at night, pale and ghostly. A revenant of herself, a person he didn't know well to begin with.

(But you don't have to know someone intimately in order to feel guilty about their death. To *be* guilty.)

It's a dream, he tells himself, because these things only come in dreams.

(No, in nightmares. She's his nightmare, except it's not her fault, is it?)

*

"You should have been there," Holly (only a figment) says. "You were supposed to be there, weren't you?"

"If I had it to do over," he says, even though he shouldn't talk to her. (Shouldn't that be a sign of insanity? Of madness beginning, of it burrowing deep inside him?)

"We'd all do something differently," she says. "But you can't have it to do over. That's the point."

"I know."

(He always will.)
