They're nestled together, side by side and waiting. A matched set, that's how he always thinks of them. And he knows it can't last forever, because there will come a day when his protégé will go out on his own, when the newest member of the team will be ready, and then they'll have to say goodbye.

It won't be long now; Horatio chose well, after all, and already his young protégé is making strides. Soon he'll surpass even Horatio's expectations, and then…then it'll be time.

For now, though…for now they're together, poised and waiting until they're called upon for action. Like superheroes, he thinks – only to himself, of course. He doesn't like to be immodest, but privately he knows the analogy follows. And just like superheroes, he knows they'll both have to go their own way eventually.

But there's no reason to dread that day, because even then they'll still be side by side. Just as Horatio and his protégé will be side by side, fighting injustice together.
