Author's Notes: Thanks for the beta, Kelly.

If there’s one thing Conrad Ecklie regrets in his life, it’s not killing his father himself.

He’s not a violent man by nature; violence in and of itself is so unsubtle, so obnoxiously obvious. He’s a man of a slick words and sly smiles—of cunning moves that bring unexpected consequences, deftly entrapping exactly who he wants to entrap. He’s mastered the art of strategy.

Maybe that would’ve shown, had he killed him—a poison, perhaps, to do the deed. Although he can’t help but think he’d rather have been more hands on.

These thoughts disturb him, sometimes—not really morally, but professionally. Murder is such a rash, unmeasured, stupid act—why take the risk, especially on scum like his father? Why even think about it?

It’s especially useless, in his case, because his father is already dead. He didn’t kill him, obviously; a semi going sixty in the opposite direction on the highway did. His father had been driving drunk and crashed head-on.

It’s probably for the best, though, because he never would’ve actually worked up the nerve to do it—to actually take his father’s life. He’s always been a coward.

Like father, like son.
