Nick Stokes is not afraid of the dark.

Unlike other children his age, the gloomy depths of his closet and the shadowy crawl space under his bed hold no fear for him. There are no imaginary boogie men waiting to pounce in the night.

No, in Nick's life the real monsters inhabit the light.

Welcomed into his home by his mother, wearing the disguise of a loving babysitter, the monster fawns and flatters and deceives.

So here he lies, cowering in his own bed. His small body pulled tightly into a ball, hiding in the blessed darkness.

Footsteps in the hallway draw his eyes to the door. Slowly, it opens, admitting the beast.

His heart hammering in his chest, he tries to make himself even smaller, to disappear, but it is of no use.

Reaching his bed, she turns on the light as she tugs the covers from his terrified grasp, exposing his vulnerable body.

"Shsss, now," she says. "It's okay; we're just going to play a game now, a big boy's game. Don't you want to be a big boy?"

He doesn't want to. He wants to cry out for his mom, for his dad, for anyone. But he is alone with the monster and he knows that he can do nothing to stop her. He never can.

His body trembles at her touch, his breath coming in rapid pants as he squeezes his eyes shut and tries to go somewhere happy in his mind.

When she is finished with him, after she has taken her pleasure and left him crying on the bed, she tells him again.

"This is our secret, Nicky. If you tell it will get you into a lot of trouble."

Then before closing the door, she turns off the light.

So he tells no one. He swallows his fear and his pain and his guilt and tries to carry on as if nothing is wrong.

But every night, as he reaches for the light switch and turns it off, he welcomes the darkness like a friend.
