Gil surreptitiously watched Greg as his boyfriend turned a page in the book he was reading, apparently absorbed in tales of the mob in Las Vegas. Greg never could enough of those stories; no matter how many he read, he was always on the lookout for more.

Gil didn't mind; it was subject that he, too, enjoyed hearing about.

He'd always thought that Greg's interest in the subject was amusing, but he had to admit that the young man was more knowledgeable in that area than anyone he'd ever known. That knowledge had helped the crime lab in the past more times than Gil could count.

Several cases that had the CSIs stumped wouldn't have been solved if it hadn't been for Greg's knowledge of the Vegas mob. Thanks to Greg, a lot of people had gotten closure.

Gil was proud of his boyfriend's knowledge, and he couldn't help wondering why Greg had never pursued the publication of the book he'd written about the mob. He knew that Warrick's death had kept Greg from that first meeting, but he must have been able to set up others.

"Greg, why didn't you ever follow up on getting your own book published?" he asked, keeping his tone carefully neutral. He didn't want Greg to think that he was being criticized for not going ahead with the publication; Gil could understand why he'd put it aside.

Greg shrugged, looking up at him. "I almost had a publishing deal, but when I had to cancel the final meeting about it on the day Warrick died, it just didn't feel right after that," he said softly, shaking his head. "I couldn't work up any enthusiasm for it any more."

"I think you should have the book published," Gil said gently, getting up from his chair and moving across the room to sit down next to Greg on the couch. "It would be something of a tribute to Warrick. You could always dedicate the book to him."

Gil knew that Warrick had encouraged Greg to publish his book, and had always joked about knowing a famous author. He would have wanted to see Greg's book in print.

For a moment, Greg looked doubtful, as though a cloud was passing over his features. Then his dark look cleared, and he reached out to take Gil's hand, giving him a smile that made his heart turn over in his chest. At that moment, he knew that he'd won Greg over.

"Yeah, that might be a good idea." Greg's voice was soft, but full of determination.

Maybe this would be just what Greg needed to help put the recent past behind him and get his life back on track, Gil told himself. Having his book published would be a good place to start -- and hopefully, it would lead Greg out of the dark place that he'd been in for far too long.
