Who would have thought we'd ever end up like this? Last night we were sat there snuggling on the sofa, flicking through photo albums. From those abrasive first days and weeks to those times comforting each other, to those first moments when we realised this might be love and on into that comfortable togetherness seemed like a long journey. It was I guess, but we did it.

I couldn't help giggling at some of Sara's photos. I love her as this serious, hard-working, dark-haired professional. I knew intellectually her parents were hippies, and expected the tie-dyed clothes, but who could imagine she'd had hair to match?

The tie-dyed hair was impressive. It really did match her clothes, in a mauve and orange pattern that really should have clashed, but somehow worked well. The fact that the shades exactly matched her clothes only added to the ensemble.

Some of the hair colours were quite subtle. Although she looked good with jet-black hair it wasn't a big change. Ash blond was a major change, but I’ve seen enough bottle blonds that it wasn't really a shock, even on Sara. It was a good job too; her eyebrows matched, which made it look more natural.

Hair with rainbow coloured stripes was a shock, especially since her hair was long enough for her to sit on at the time. Fire engine red wasn't too bad, but a little startling on an Afro on a 5 year old.

The blue forelock worked well. Somehow it highlighted the impact of her eyes. She must have been about 15 by then, all coltish grace, with arms and legs that she hadn't quite grown into. She looked cute and endearing, the first time that you could really see the woman that I've grown to love in the photos rather than a child who will grow into her.

She pretended to be hurt that I was giggling at her various hair colours. She was mollified when I pointed out how much I like the black as well as some of the other looks.

Perhaps I know what I will give myself as a treat - Sara a dye job, back to that gorgeous jet-black.

AN: At least one person will recognise at least one of the hair styles mentioned I guess. I full admit to stealing that appearance to. Hope she enjoys the sideways mention of the movie.
