I always followed the rules.

Once again we argued, but it didn't end with you storming off and leaving me to a whirlwind of emotions.

You changed the rules.

Instead, you turned away, and it took a few minutes before I realised you were crying.

All my anger vanished as soon as I saw your pain. I pulled you into my arms and held you until your tears dried up.

Then you looked into my eyes and with a flash of realization, I saw in your eyes what must have been mirrored in my own.

You let me in.

You changed the rules.

Things stayed the same for a while, we argued, you stormed off, but all the time, I knew your secret.

A secret you'd been fighting to keep, the same secret I've fought to keep all these years.

But I didn't act, didn't tell you I knew.

I was too afraid to change the rules.

Then we argued again.

The tension in the room was so thick you could have cut it with a knife.

And you pressed your lips against mine.

I'd like to say I changed the rules.

I'd like to say I kissed you back.

But I was too afraid.

I ran, I ran until I was safe in my apartment.

I cried, because I knew you wanted me just as much as I wanted you, but I was too much of a coward to do anything.

I tried to drink my thoughts of you away, but only caused more.

I'm a coward, unlike you.

Then someone knocked on my door.

I opened it, and you stood there, eyes bright with unshed tears.

I didn't know what to do, what to say, as once again you'd changed the rules.

You knew what to do.

You rained kisses on my lips, all the time begging me to kiss you back.

So I took a risk.

I kissed you, and once I had, I knew there was no going back.

Once my mind caught up with me, we were lying spent in my bed.

You had fallen into an exhausted sleep in my arms.

Or so I thought.

I changed the rules, and I didn't even know.

"I love you," I whispered.

Then your eyes opened and you smiled.

"I love you too Sara."

And after that, there were no longer rules.

Just you, and me, and that was all that mattered.

That was all that had ever mattered from day one, but we had to change the rules to see that.
