The muted TV blinks as you pour another drink, rubbing the tiredness from eyes that need to close. You've thought about calling her every day for the past 3 months but as soon as the dial tone hits your ear, the phone seems to slam itself back into the cradle. When did you become so stubborn? Or maybe you're just scared you'll hear another voice at the end of the line, some sweet little rookie with bluer eyes than you and not as many lines. Jesus Catherine, get a grip, you're not in high school now.

Sighing, you flop onto the sofa and finish the glass in one swallow. It's now or never babe.

You don't even have to think about the numbers as you punch them in, your mind reaching for something cool and calm to say when (if) she answers. Ok, breathe, it's ringing. The knock at the door startles you, and you curse whoever it is for having such bad timing.

With the phone cradled between your ear and shoulder, you reach for the handle and stop, listening. That ringtone sounds familiar. The blood rushes around your heart frantically as you open the door and she's there, on your door step.

A few hazy moments pass as you try hard to remember how to breathe.

"Hey Catherine." You hear the nervous shake in her voice, her hands twitching in her pockets.

"Hey stranger, I was just..."

"Calling me?" She smiles and you're captured, again.

You don't get a chance to ask her in before both phones land on the floor, lips finding each other again after so long apart.

----

You watch her sleeping, your hands entwined, a perfect fit.

"I missed you." You whisper and she smiles, suddenly very awake and pulling you back under the sheets. It always amazes you how she turns up, right when you need her the most.
