. A/N 1: I haven't written a word for some weeks (except in checking through Making Friends...) but this idea just popped up following the epi and I've just written it! It could be more I think...except, and this is truly weird...that I've been writing fics about GSR splitting up and Nick and Gil getting together since they actually went off into the jungle together...***
It was the song that ran through Nick's head as she said that they had split up. He hoped he was able to keep his face from displaying his elation at her words.
Why, exactly, Tammy Wynette's old country song should suddenly come into his mind he had no idea but it did and he could hear Tammy drawling out the letters spelling the word. And poor little J-o-e.
At least they were no children. Then he wondered if Sara had wanted children. Or had Gil?
He made polite noises he was sure. He didn't have to feign his surprise.
But Gil had left to be with Sara and Sara had returned without Gil. Why hadn't they stayed together? What was it that had caused the split? Gil never did anything rash or rushed. So he must have been thinking about it for a long time...and they hadn't been married for that long a time.
It was a puzzle. It was an opening for him and he knew it. Only...what if Gil had met someone else? What if he'd dumped Sara for another woman...or worse, another man? But what if Sara had actually dumped Gil and she was blaming him?
He had no answers to his questions and he couldn't...wouldn't ask Sara. But he could ask Gil. He knew which agency arranged his work. He knew he was in Paraguay. He knew he was on a dig using his forensic skills to date and ascertain details of the deaths of the remains... In fact he knew a lot about Gil Grissom...
But he didn't know until that moment that Gil was maybe...just maybe...available...
And this time he wasn't going to take a back seat and let his life pass him by; this time he wasn't going to prevaricate and wait for things to happen.
This time he was going to make it happen...
The End...or even the beginning!***
