This would certainly be a surprise for Greg. Gil hoped it would be a good one.

An unexpected surprise, but one that Gil was sure would be appreciated.

He smiled down at the puppy curled in her basket, sleeping soundly. He'd spent a lot of time yesterday going to the shelter and picking out this dog.

Gil had been doing a great deal of reading lately, and it had interested him to find out that it was said people could derive emotional comfort from physically petting a cat or a dog. He'd intended to get a cat at first, but he'd changed his mind.

She was part Labrador and part spaniel, so she would grow to a fairly good size. He couldn't see Greg with a tiny little dog, but this one was perfect.

A dog for both home and outdoors, Gil told himself.

He wondered what Greg would name the puppy; he hadn't been able to think of any names himself, and he wasn't going to. She was Greg's dog; he should name her.

She was such a sweet puppy, Gil thought as he scratched her gently behind the ears. He was sure that what he'd read was correct; he could almost feel contentment seeping through him when he petted the dog, as if her presence somehow soothed him.

That was what he wanted to do for his boyfriend; he wanted Greg to have a pet who would give him the kind of unconditional love that only an animal could.

Greg should be home at any moment now .... Gil smiled to himself as he heard the car door slam outside. Yes, Greg was here, he'd discover his surprise soon.

He didn't turn around when his boyfriend opened the front door; it took Greg a few moments to shed his coat and walk around the couch. The first thing his eyes alighted on when he did so was the basket holding the sleeping puppy, placed by Gil's feet.

"Gil! Who is this?" he asked, laughing as he knelt to pet the puppy. "She's adorable! Are we taking care of her for somebody?" he queried, looking up at Gil.

Gil shook his head, unable to hold back a smile.

"No, we're not," he answered. "She's yours, Greg. I wanted to get you a surprise, and I thought a dog would be a great companion for you. For both of us."

"She's mine?" Greg couldn't keep back his smile; the puppy awakened; yapping softly, then licking Greg's hand with a wet pink tongue. He picked her up, cuddling her, laughing as she licked his face. It was obviously love at first sight -- for both man and dog.

"Now you have to decide what to name her," Gil said, feeling satisfied that his gift had gone over so well. He could almost see a change in Greg already.

"Aghra," Greg answered immediately. "Her name is Aghra. It means 'my treasure.'"

Somehow, the name couldn't have seemed more perfect.
