"What's your ex like?" Steve asked, casting a curious glance at Greg.

Greg shrugged, hunching his shoulders, obviously bothered by the question. "Why do you want to know?" he asked, sounded irritable. "You're not going to spend time with him."

"I was just wondering." Steve shrugged in a mirror image of Greg's movement, looking over at his boyfriend again before reaching to take Greg's hand in his own as they ambled down the beach. "It's not important, Greg. I was just curious, that's all."

Greg sighed, his shoulders lifting again as he stopped walking and turned to gaze out over the ocean. "Nick's not a bad guy. We just .... grew apart."

Steve nodded, squeezing his hand. "That happens sometimes."

"I didn't think it would," Greg whispered. "But I should have known better. When he started complaining and seemed like he wasn't in love any more, I should have guessed."

"It's not always easy to do that when you're the one on the receiving end," Steve said, his heart aching for Greg. He was glad that his boyfriend's ex had pushed him away, though; if he hadn't, then Greg wouldn't have come here, and they wouldn't be together.

"What could he have had to complain about when it comes to you?" Steve asked, trying to keep his tone light. "I can't find anything wrong with you."

Greg sighed again, closing his eyes, his words coming out slowly. "He said that I was .... too serious. That I didn't know how to have fun. That I'd ... turned sour."

"Then he's crazy," Steve said softly, shaking his head. He moved closer to Greg, wrapping his arms around the younger man's waist, his intense blue gaze meeting Greg's. "You're the sweetest person I've ever had the pleasure of knowing," he whispered.

To prove his point, he bent his head, kissing Greg gently at first, then with more fervor. Within moments, the familiar passion had risen between the two of them.

Steve raised his head, a satisfied smile curving his lips.

"A little tart on the surface, maybe, but sweet on the inside," Steve murmured with a soft smile. "There's definitely honey at the heart."

That was Greg in a nutshell, Steve thought, lowering his head to brush his lips across his boyfriend's mouth again. He might pretend to be tart and sharp-tongued sometimes, but there was always honey at the heart of him, a sweetness that he couldn't cover up.

"I guess he got tired of looking for the sweet side," Greg murmured against Steve's lips. "Or he just forgot it was there. But it is. And you're the only person who gets it now."

"Then I'm a very lucky man," Steve whispered, losing himself in yet another passionate kiss.
