It was the next morning when Gibbs arrived at the bullpen. He was surprised to see that Tony’s desk was empty. Tony was usually at his desk before him. 

Gibbs sighed heavily, and wondered briefly if Tony was deliberately ignoring him and not coming in early anymore as he walked over to his desk, not noticing the box and envelope. It was only when Gibbs sat down that he saw them.

Gibbs frowned, recognizing the box, it belonged to him but he knew that Tony has taken it under his care. He opened the box and inside there were his medals.

Gibbs groaned. He hoped it was not what he was thinking what Tony has done.  Taking the envelope, he tore it open.

All it read was:

    I quit. Don’t come after me. Goodbye.

It wasn’t signed but Gibbs knew who it was from.

“Damn, DiNozzo!”

Gibbs got up abruptly, the chair falling to the floor with a bang, and went up the stairs to the Director’s office. Without knocking, Gibbs burst in.

“What’s this?” Gibbs yelled, holding the letter up.

Jenny took her glasses off and looked up at Gibbs.

“A letter?” Jenny asked, sarcastically.

“Don’t joke with me, Sheppard,” Gibbs growled. “Is Tony gone?”

“He gave me his resignation yesterday, Gibbs. As he worked right through his vacation hours, as of today, he’s no longer an agent,” Jenny glared at Gibbs hard.

“Didn’t you tell him about the promotion? He deserved his own team!”

“I did offer.”

Gibbs went still and glared at Jenny. He knew at once that he has lost Tony for good.

Gibbs turned and walked out of the office, leaving Jenny bemused.

Ziva was just sitting down, when Gibbs tore down the stairs, angrily. Ziva looked up and saw that Gibbs looked angry.

“McGee!” Gibbs barked and McGee hurriedly stood up.

Gibbs pointed to McGee. “You are in charge!”

And witth that, Gibbs grabbed his ruckbag and disappeared, leaving Ziva and McGee behind.

“Wh-what?” Ziva was confused. “What just happened?”

McGee looked at Ziva with a sad look. He walked over to Ziva and took an envelope out of his jacket.

“This is from Tony.”

Ziva took the envelope, and was about to ask McGee why Tony was writing to her, when McGee said that he had to go down to see Ducky.

Ziva opened her mouth to protest but McGee was already gone. She looked down at the envelope in her hands. Sighing heavily, she tore the envelope and read the letter.

When she was finished, Ziva ran to the toilets and locked herself in a stall, and cried. She was hurt that Tony didn’t say goodbye face to face. Ziva was angry with Gibbs for allowing this to happen. But a small part of her understood why Tony had to get away.
