"Is this what you want?" Nick asked.

"Yeah," Greg replied. Then he shook his head. "No. I mean, I don't know."

Nick sighed and started tapping his fingers on his knees.

"I thought I did, Nick," Greg continued. "I wanted you for a while. A long while, which is probably why I don't think I want you like that anymore." Greg looked down at his lap. "You're a good friend and coworker. I like what we have."

"I see." Nick didn't show pain or anger from Greg's admission.

Greg shrugged. "It must have just been a crush."

"Do you still want to kiss me? And make sure?"

Greg nodded, leaning until his lips were pressed against Nick's. He put all he could muster into the kiss, waiting for the bursts of light and beautiful violin chords and all the other clichéd expressions about the perfect kiss, but not one appeared. Nick moved to slide a hand up Greg's arm, but Greg broke away.

"Sorry, Nick." He looked Nick right in the eyes.

"Nothing?" Nick asked, a hint of hopefulness in his voice.

"Nothing."

Silence filled the gap between them until Greg rose. He grabbed his jacket off the arm of the sofa, said something about hoping this wouldn't make work awkward, and headed for the door.

"Thanks," Greg said, turning to look at Nick as he turned the knob.

"Welcome," Nick answered emptily, staring at the now-closed door. This wasn't how he wanted it to be.
