I look round the old place one last time, checking everything is clean and in its rightful place before closing the door for the last time.

It’s not so clean that a good CSI couldn’t find traces of us, but cleaner than any normal person would leave it.

Even on that last check I find reminders of our time here together:
A scuff mark on the skirting board where you always kick your shoes off. It’s painted over, but I noticed the damage to the wood under the paint.
The tile in the kitchen that isn’t quite the same colour as the rest. Lindsey’s fault that one. She’d dropped a tub of ice cream and broken the tile. Fixing it took us an age, finding a tile that nearly matched was hard enough, repairing it whilst naked and fooling around was fun, but it didn’t make for a quick job. The memory brings a wistful smile to my face and a tear to my eye. Good times.
The dents in the ceiling, almost on top of each other from the champagne corks, celebrating our first and second anniversaries.
In the bathroom one of your hairs caught by the side of the bath. The tears and the smiles come back as I carefully pick it up, put it in the locket I’m wearing. A keepsake, a reminder of the good old times.

My inspection stops when I hearing the car horn sounding outside. It’s time to say good-bye to this old place. The place we’re moving into, properly, together, joint-ownership will pick up its own memories and special marks soon enough.
