Greg stared up at the ceiling in the darkness, lost in thought.

This was one of the few nights of the week that he didn't spend with Don; his boyfriend was working tonight, out there keeping the streets of New York safe.

He was proud of Don, proud to be the one he'd chosen to be with. Every time he looked at the man he loved, he could almost feel his heart swelling in his chest; he knew that he would never love anyone the way that he loved Don Flack, if he lived to be a hundred years old.

Don was the only man he'd ever given his heart to completely, the only man he ever wanted to be with. He wanted the two of them to last forever.

But something told him that wasn't going to happen.

He didn't know why, but it felt as though darkness was closing in on him, a darkness that he was trying desperately to push back.

No matter how he kept pushing at it, no matter which way he turned to get away from it, Greg could feel that darkness pressing down on him, closing in on all sides. He had no idea where it was coming from; he only knew that it was there, that it existed.

He needed to talk to Don about it, but he didn't feel as though he could. Whenever he thought about doing so, his mind shrank away from broaching the subject.

What would Don think? Would he simply laugh and say that he was imagining it -- or would he say the words that Greg was so afraid of hearing?

Did Don want to end it with him? Were the two of them starting to grow apart, in his eyes? Greg didn't think that they were, but he and Don hadn't talked much about their relationship lately. They were simply letting it coast, enjoying what they had one day at a time.

Something in him felt that Don was pulling back, that he was deliberately putting some distance between them. And it frightened him more than he could say.

He didn't want distance. Not now. He wanted closeness, and security.

Yet something told him that he wasn't going to get those things, and that they would never come again. It felt as though the darkness just kept moving closer and closer.

The thought made Greg shudder; he didn't know what was coming next, or where his relationship with Don was going, but he could sense that they were in for a bump ride. He could just feel it, no matter what his boyfriend might say to the contrary.

He sighed softly, closing his eyes. He wanted to push that darkness away, to deny that it could affect him, but he knew that it was impossible to do so.

All he could do was wait for the darkness to move even closer.
