Greg looked down at the letter in his hand, unable to believe its contents. This wasn't anything that he had expected -- or that he'd wanted, either. It upset his status quo, and raised all kinds of anger and uncertainty within him that he didn't want to deal with.

Nick wanted to come here to Hawaii. Nick wanted to try to talk him into coming back to Vegas, to being in a relationship that was going nowhere.

He was so angry at his ex-boyfriend's presumption that he would even want to come back, to take up his old job in the Vegas crime lab and get back into a dead-end relationship as though nothing had happened, that his hands were shaking.

Greg took a deep breath and closed his eyes, trying to calm himself down.

Nick couldn't make him go back to Vegas. Even if he came here -- which Greg sincerely hoped he wouldn't -- he ahd no power any more. Their relationship was over and done; Greg was with Steve now, and he was happy. He wouldn't leave, not for any reason.

Nothing could make him give Steve up. Nothing could make him go back to being in a relationship where he would always be second-best to Nick's job, where he would never come first with his boyfriend. Steve didn't treat him like that. With Steve, he was first.

Nothing would make him go back to the life had led in Vegas. It had worked for a while, but he had long since outgrown the uneven relationship he'd had with Nick. And if his ex-boyfriend thought that he'd go back to that kind of relationship, then he was crazy.

But that was what the letter said -- Nick was coming here to try to talk him into coming back. He needed to write Nick a letter, or better yet, to call him, and let him know that coming here would be useless. He was already involved with someone he loved.

It was too late for Nick to get him back. He had moved on.

He'd have to call Nick and tell him, Greg thought with a soft sigh. This wasn't something that he could say in a letter, in words written down on paper. He no longer loved Nick the way that he had before, but he wanted them to stay friends, and he should let Nick down easy.

When he'd left Vegas, he had made up his mind that he was going to start a new life. He'd done just that, and now it was time for Nick to realize that fact.

Greg sighed, folding the letter and shoving it between the pages of the book he was reading. He would call Nick later and tell him not to bother to come to Hawaii if he thought they would be together; the past was over and done with, and he was never going back.
