Greg was frantic. He and Nick had another fight, and now he didn't know where Nick was. They'd had fights before, and one or the other had left, but neither had stayed gone long. This time was different, though. Nick had stopped talking midway through the argument, and Greg knew that when Nick stopped yelling and talking loud that he was beyond pissed. It usually meant that Nick was livid! Greg knew that, but he had kept going. Greg couldn't stand the uncomfortable silence, and had gone on running his mouth. Nick had been gone for hours, and Greg had no idea where to look for him. He tried call Nick's cell phone earlier, but that did no good. Greg couldn't figure out why he was hearing Nick's ring tone coming from the front closet, and when he looked, there was Nick's cell phone in his jacket pocket.

Greg wanted Nick to know that he was sorry for his part in the argument, and that he really didn't mean some of the things he had said. He wanted to tell Nick to came on home so they could work things out, but had no idea how to get in touch with him. He had call most of their friends and co-workers, but no one had seen or heard from Nick. Greg had considered going out to look for Nick himself, but was afraid that Nick would call, and he would miss it. So he paced the floor and every time a car went by out front, he ran to the window to see if it was Nick. Greg was exhausted from worrying and lay down on the couch. He was sleeping fitfully when the home phone rang.....

“Hello?...”

“Greg?”

“Nicky, is that you? Baby, where are you?”

Greg could only hear part of what Nick was saying because the connection was really bad, and there was static on the line.....

“Greg, can you hear me? Greg?.....”

“Nicky, I can barely hear you....Baby, I'm sorry for what I said. Are you okay?”

“I guess...I feel foolish for leaving like that.”

“It's okay, Nicky.”

“Are you still mad at me?”

“No, Nicky, I'm not mad...I want you to...Hello???”

“Nick, are you still there??? Nick?.....”

Greg panicked when he couldn't get Nick back on the line. He hung the phone up and then picked it up again. He dialed “0” and waited for the operator to pick up.....

“Operator, may I help you?”

“Yes, operator...I need to know if you can trace a call for me. I'm a bit desperate, and I need your help...”

“What seems to be the trouble?”

“My boyfriend and I had a fight, and he left. He just called me and the connection was really bad. We couldn't hear each other very well, and he was crying. He's my baby, and I want him to come home. I didn't get a chance to tell him that before we got disconnected.....”

“Okay, sir, let me see what I can do....”

“Oh, thank you ...”

The operator seemed to take forever, and Greg's patience was running thin.....

“Sir?”

“Yes?”

“I can't seem to get a trace on that line. It must have come from a pay phone....”

“Operator, please try one more time...If I lose him, I know I'll lose my mind....”

The operator came back on a minute later....
“Sir, it's no use...I can't seem to find out anything. I'm sorry....”

“Well, thanks for trying.....”

Greg hung up the phone as the tears began to fall. He'd really fucked up this time.....
