Catherine and I had taken two days off to spend together. Grissom had muttered, but the latest vacation policy meant he couldn't do more than complain, and we'd taken advantage of that to be alone together.

Here we were tucked up in bed, with the light from candles letting us see each other. We both needed a rest. Earlier that night Catherine had brought me to screaming orgasms with her tongue, her fingers, and then with her tongue again. Love isn't about taking turns with these things, or so she tells me, but that hadn't stopped me returning the favour like for like.

In the flickering light I can see Catherine's beautiful body. The changes in colour between her breast skin and the areolae, the different colours in her hair, the tight curls between her legs, hiding her centre away. All that and I could still taste her on my tongue: a wonderful sensory overload. I know that she is returning the compliment, I can feel her eyes gazing at my body. I know I'm not beautiful, but Catherine thinks I am and I'm happy to bask in her love-blinded gaze.

It's kinda odd. We don't have as much time together as either of us would like, between work, Lindsey and everything else it takes some organising for us to spend a whole night together. Normally there is a mind-blowing sexual workout and then a collapse into sleep – either tired from work, or needing to sleep for work in the morning.

Now, with time to spare, we are tongue-tied, not quite sure what to say to each other that is neither about work nor about sex.

There are crashes and bangs from outside. We both seize on this to avoid the awkward silence. There is a car crash, but the uniforms are already there, so we can ignore it. At the same time we both notice something odd. The hotel opposite us, and the casinos that we can see are in darkness. It doesn't matter to us that there is a power failure; we are free to return to our cocoon, lit by candles and kept warm by each other.

As we climb back into bed together and snuggle up words suddenly flow between us. The failure outside seems to have broken our hesitancy with each other. Suddenly it feels comfortable and natural to talk about anything and everything.
