"He tried to name which of the deadly seven sins might apply, and when he failed he decided to append an eighth, regret." Charles Frazier, Cold Mountain.

You watch from the corner of your eyes as she reapplies her makeup, and when she turns she looks unattainable/cheap [reader to delete as applicable] all over again. She, in denial that you were ever on her, covers the evidence with lipstick and leather.

She opens the window to dusk in Vegas, the rumble of traffic, the clatter of dice and the shuffle of cards. Tells you to get dressed or you'll be late for work. Says something else but her voice is caught by the wind (and you're happy to let it go).

She won't look at you and you can't stop looking at her (she catches you staring at her in the mirror). Your cigarette burns down until it's nothing more than a column of ash; quick, flick it away before the embers catch your skin.

(But it's too late; you've been burnt already, by her cold fingers and her regret)
