Ryan looked over at the couch where Greg was sleeping, a soft smile curving his lips. He hadn't meant to let his boyfriend fall asleep here in the living room, but it had taken him longer to make breakfast than he'd thought it would, and they'd had a long night at work.
He would wake Greg up in a few minutes, of course. He didn't want their food to get cold, and he was sure that his boyfriend was hungry. But for the moment, he just wanted to sit here and watch Greg sleep, and let his love for this man come to the surface.
When he'd lived in Miami, he had dreamed of meeting someone like Greg, but had never thought that he would. He'd been convinced that the man he was looking for didn't exist; that man was something out of his dreams, something that no human being could live up to.
Greg wasn't absolutely perfect, of course. He was human; he had his faults. But he was the closest thing to perfect that Ryan had ever known -- and most important, Greg was perfect for him. Even with all of his faults, he wouldn't change the man he loved in any way.
Besides, if Greg was perfect in every way, their relationship wouldn't have lasted, Ryan told himself. He would be bored by someone who was perfect and never put a foot wrong. If someone didn't have faults, then they would be the most deadly dull person Ryan had ever met.
Those faults and imperfections were part of what made Greg the person he was, and part of the reason that Ryan had fallen in love with him. And then there were his good qualities, so many of them that Ryan couldn't begin to count them all.
Greg was brave, and loyal, and compassionate, and smart, and funny .... Ryan couldn't even begin to think of all the words that described the man he loved. He wasn't even going to try to enumerate all of those qualities that were a part of Greg; he knew that he'd never finish the list.
And beautiful, he thought with a smile as he studied his sleeping boyfriend's relaxed features. Greg was the most beautiful man he'd ever laid eyes on. When they had first met, he'd thought that Greg looked more like a model than like a working CSI.
He only seemed to grow more beautiful with each passing day, at least in Ryan's eyes. When he woke up every morning and saw Greg in bed next to him, he couldn't help but wonder anew at how he'd gotten so lucky as to fall in love with the man of his dreams.
What was even more wondrous to him was that Greg felt the same way about him. He'd long since given up on falling in love when he'd moved here to Las Vegas, convinced that it wasn't meant for him, and that he would never have a committed, loving relationship.
Then he had met Greg, and everything about his life had changed. He hadn't felt alone any longer; he'd loved deeply for the first time in his life, and he had known that he was loved in return. It was amazing how love had changed all of his perceptions.
He was a better person for loving Greg, and being loved by him, Ryan told himself. That love had not only made him stronger, but it had made him more compassionate, more accepting of others. Love had transfomred him in so many ways, and made him more of the person he wanted to be.
And none of it would have been possible if it wasn't for the beautiful man lying on the couch within an arm's length of him. Greg had changed his world, changed so much about him, for the better. He owed this man so much that he knew he would never be able to repay.
All that he could do to show Greg how much he meant to him was to love him as deeply and as fiercely as he possibly could, for the rest of their days. That wouldn't be hard for him to do at all, Ryan thought with a smile. Loving Greg was the easiest thing he'd ever done in his life.
It was easy to love someone who was so beautiful, Ryan thought, stretching out a hand to gently brush a lock of hair back from Greg's forehead. He'd fallen in love at first sight -- or at least lust -- just based on Greg's physical beauty. He'd been head over heels, right from the beginning.
Or had it just been the physical side? He didn't really think so. There had been something in Greg's eyes that had captured his attention, something in those dark depths that told him there was more to this man than what was easily apparent on the surface.
His attraction to Greg might have been only physical during those first few seconds that he'd beheld the man, but it hadn't taken more than that brief period of time for him to realize that there was much more to Greg than just good looks. And he'd responded to that.
Yes, Greg was so beautiful that it almost made him weep sometimes just to look at his boyfriend. But there were so many other things about him that Ryan loved, so many things that were much more important than beauty, qualities that made him the impressive person he was.
Greg was the most fascinating man he'd ever known, Ryan thought to himself. Even if they hadn't been meant for each other, even if they hadn't fallen in love, he would gladly be this man's partner in the professional sense, and be thankful each and every day for his friendship.
But he didn't want to think like that. He didn't want to even envision a life for himself without Greg in it as his partner, his lover, and his best friend. Greg added so much to his life, so much that he had never thought he could have. He was a lucky man indeed.
What amazed him the most was that Greg could feel the same way about him. He didn't think that he was a bad person by any stretch of the imagination, but he had also never thought that he could possibly be loved in the way that Greg loved him. He hadn't thought that kind of love existed.
At least, he hadn't thought that it was meant for him, even though he knew that some people found that kind of love in their lives. It still humbled him to think that he'd found that love, that someone could care about him in the way that Greg did.
How had such a beautiful man fallen in love with him? It still didn't seem possible; there were times when Ryan felt as though he was living in a fairy tale, and he was somehow playing the role of the princess who'd been sleeping for hundreds of years before being awakened by a kiss.
One thing was for sure, he told himself with a smile. He had definitely found his handsome prince, and he loved that prince more than he would have thought it possible for anyone to love. His beautiful prince, the man he intended to spend all of eternity with.
The man sleeping only a short space away from him was so beautiful that it took his breath away. And he had no doubt that as time went on and they became even closer, that Greg would grow ever more beautiful in his eyes. His love for this man could only grow with time.
Ryan looked up at the clock, a smile curving his lips. It was time to wake up his sleeping beauty with a kiss, and tell him that breakfast was ready. He couldn't wait to do just that -- and to see how much more beautiful Greg would look when he opened his eyes and they shared a loving smile.***
