They both knew the end was coming. It was just a matter of time. They didn't argue or fight. No harsh words were exchanged. They sat down one evening after work and talked it over . They agreed that it was probably for the best that it happen.

Don seemed reluctant to agree that Adam was right. Things had run their course between them, and it was time to move on. After Adam went to bed one night, Don sat thinking about the two of them, and what was going to happen now.

Since Adam had moved into Don's place, it was decided that Adam would find a place of his own. It didn't take long, and Adam had started moving his things into his new place. He only had a few things left to pick up at Don's and needed to return his key.

Adam stopped by Don's one day when he knew Don would be home. He knocked on the door and Don let him in. The two exchanged pleasantries and Adam explained why he was there. Don had stacked everything neatly by the door.

Adam gave Don his key and was soon on his way. Don had helped him carry the boxes down to Adam's car and soon Adam was driving away. Don stood on the sidewalk a bit teary-eyed. He went back upstairs and cried himself to sleep.

When Adam got to his apartment, he unloaded the car and began unpacking the boxes he picked up at Don's. He got down to the last box and found an envelope addressed to him in Don's unique handwriting. Curious, he opened the envelope and took out the single sheet of paper and began to read…..

Adam,

I wrote this because there are some things I want you to know. I know now that it would have wrong to try and make you stay. I shed my tears in private so you wouldn't know how much it really hurt to lose you. I know you are probably thinking that if it hurt so much, then why did it happen. I still don't know the answer to that one myself.

I do want you to know that if you ever need anything, please don't hesitate to ask. I hope you eventually find somebody who will be better for you that I was. If you need a place to hide, these arms of mine are open wide. Adam, always remember I'll still be around.

Don

Adam reads the letter once more, and put it back in the envelope. He wiped his tears away and finished his unpacking. It felt good to know that he hadn't screwed things up so badly that he couldn't call on Don if need be. He may not need to, but it was nice to know the option was there.
