Ryan couldn't stop smiling as he strode out of Russell's office.

He hadn't thought that he and Greg could get time off, least of all some time together. But wonder of wonders, Russell had agreed to let them do it.

Ryan had laid out their case, told him that they were burning out on the job -- and pointed out that such a thing could cause them to make mistakes, to overlook small discrepancies that they wouldn't otherwise look past. Russell had frowned at that, but he'd agreed.

After all, he was right, Ryan reasoned. Being overworked and burnt out did cause mistakes, and that wasn't something he and Greg wanted to do.

They took pride in their work, and they both loved what they did.

But they did need a vacation, that was obvious. Everyone in the crime lab did, but he and Greg had been putting in more hours than most people lately.

It had seemed like a dream come true when Russell had told him that it was obvious he and Greg needed some time off -- and had signed their vacation requests, adding a second week to the one week they'd each asked for. That had amazed Ryan.

Russell needed them around, but he also needed them to be at their best, and he'd made it clear that was why he was giving them two weeks off.

He'd thought he was dreaming when Russell had said that they could have so much time off -- and that they could have it together, which meant the world to him.

Did Russell somehow know that they were a couple? The thought made Ryan's steps slow; a frown creased his forehead as he thought back over all the times that they might have given their secret away. Was it possible that Russell knew, and wasn't saying anything?

Then he shook his head, dismissing the thought from his mind. If Russell had known, then they wouldn't be working together as professional partners.

Russell wouldn't allow that. It would be a flagrant breaking of the rules.

But then again, Russell was the kind of guy who didn't seem to care much for rules, Ryan mused. Maybe he at least guessed, and was looking the other way.

If he was, then so much the better .As long as they were discreet, Ryan was fairly sure that their boss was the kind of person who would be easygoing about breaking this particular rule -- especially considering that he and Greg made one hell of a team at work.

Ryan pushed those thoughts to the back of his mind, a smile curving his lips as he hurried towards the small office he shared with Greg.

If this was a dream, it was the best one he'd had in a very long time.
