Summary: Lake Mead by moonlight...The crisp autumn air wrapped its way around the desert, its cool embrace briskly hugging the skins of the people leaving pimples behind where it had crossed. The breeze took with it the dust and dirt that had dislodged itself and took it towards the town in a rolling ‘storm’ that smashed against the exposed. Out towards Lake Mead, the once blossoming trees were loosing their plumage, the fresh greens being replaced with old yellows as the winter nipped at its heels.
The water was calm, barely a ripple upon the inky black surface, just the reflection of the moon and stars remained dancing across it- there wasn’t a sign of neon anywhere. The insects hummed along to a melody that they didn’t know, only improvised, to give the night a unique symphony that no other ears would ever hear… Jut reserved especially for the two that sat there.
Hidden beneath the branches of an overhanging tree, the two remained watching within the darkness whilst ignoring the rest of the world that rolled on past. They huddled close, draping the blanket over their shoulders providing them with warmth and shelter from the prevailing wind. They’d come to escape the world, to ignore the hustle and bustle of people and to instead revel in the tranquillity that the lake retreat offered.
There were still the last embers of the warm day that crept about, most of it trapped between the two bodies that merged together somewhere beneath the checkered wool, conjoined it seemed. But let it be known that they were indeed two that were just simply pieces of one another, completing the puzzle of their lives.
A comfortable silence had settled between them, a moment in time neither dared to disturb with banter nor with chatter, there was no need to fill the air with words. Sometimes there were the snippets of time that quiet was enough, when quiet meant more than words ever could amount to. That’s why neither particularly made a move to speak- finding that they could say nothing to add to the moment.
The younger of the two focused intently on the edge of the water and how it lapped at the reeds of the shoreline. The other focused on memorising his partner with photographic precision. He wanted to remember it all, the wayward hair, the chocolate irises laced with a hidden intent and the smile that only slightly played upon his lips but yet still had more purity behind it than other smiles. It was those things that had first enticed him, drawn him like a moth towards the flame, now though the list of why he never wanted to let go was longer than anyone could comprehend.
He released a blissful sigh, happy with the way his life was panning out. Never before had he felt so complete and content, never had he wanted to hold onto someone as much as the person nestled within his arms. It felt like a surreal dream where he was floating on air and in a split second it was all going to disappear.
That’s why he squeezed him for extra reassurance it wasn’t a dream.
The chocolate eyes looked up at him, curiosity evident as he tried pry further into the thoughts running through his mind. The younger didn’t ask though, finding that his partner would tell him one day, maybe when his thoughts were more uncontained.
Carefully he pressed their lips together in what could only be described in tender affection. There was nothing he could say that would ever complete the moments they shared, there was no amount of poems that could truly describe just what he felt. He could only hope that the sweetness of his kiss could remind Greg exactly why words were sometimes unneeded.
