This silence was unnerving.

Greg sat up on the hotel room bed, heaving a sigh. It was no use trying to go to sleep; his brain was far too active for that. It was a miracle that he got as much sleep as he did, considering that his mind always seemed to be running in overdrive.

He couldn't stop thinking about the man who was stalking him, and wondering if the bastard had shown up at his home again in the last few days.

He'd been here in the hotel for three days, and there were cops keeping an eye on his apartment building. So far, they hadn't seen anyone go near Greg's apartment, other than the mailman. And they had actually stopped him and checked him out, to make sure of who he was.

No, his stalker was apparently exercising some caution.

And he was stuck here in a hotel, being escorted to and from work, and being forced to stay here when he wasn't at work, or out somewhere with the other CSIs. But really, all they did was go out to breakfast after work, so it wasn't much of a social life.

Not a social life at all, really. And while he didn't spend nearly as much time going out lately as he had when he was younger, before he became a CSI, he did still enjoy going out and having a good time. So staying in a hotel alone was driving him crazy.

And the silence was really getting to him. It seemed to stretch on forever, until he thought he heard things that couldn't possibly be there. If he had to spend one more night here alone in this hotel room, with no company but that silence, he would go nuts.

He had to get out of here. Or at least talk to someone. Greg reached for his cell phone, then sighed and put it down again. He was probably the only night shift CSI who was still awake. Everyone else would be asleep after a long night at work.

He was completely alone, silence his only companion.

Heaving another frustrated sigh, he let himself fall back onto the mattress, staring unseeingly up at the ceiling. He didn't feel like watching a movie, or doing much of anything else. Really, the only thing to do was sleep -- yet sleep was impossible.

He was wide awake. There was no way he'd be able to fall asleep any time soon, especially with the heavy silence permeating the room.

The only thing he could do was lie here until he fell asleep -- and then get up tomorrow and do it all over again, until his stalker was caught and put behind bars. He really didn't have a choice, not if he cared about his own safety.

Greg sighed once more -- and the unnerving silence all around him seemed to sigh back.
