Ryan couldn't hold back a smile as he got out of his car and picked up the gifts he'd gotten for Greg before closing the door. He had gone out on the pretext of running to the grocery store; he didn't think he'd been out long enough for his boyfriend to be suspicious.

He had actually gone to the grocery store, as well, to pick up the gallon of milk that he'd said he would get, since they needed it. Fortunately, the florist's place was right next to the grocery, and he'd picked up the other half of his surprise along with the milk.

All right, so maybe flowers and chocolates might seem like a too-traditional Valentine's Day gift, Ryan told himself as he headed for the door of their apartment. But he knew that Greg liked flowers -- and he'd already seen his boyfriend' predilection for chocolates more than once.

How was it that Greg could eat chocolate and not seem to gain so much as an ounce of weight? he asked himself with a grin. That didn't really matter, though, not on Valentine's Day. He just wanted to get his lover something that he knew Greg would appreciate.

And even though it might seem sentimental and silly, a bouquet of white and red roses, as well as a huge heart-shaped box of chocolates, seemed to fit the bill. He couldn't wait to see the look on Greg's face when he walked into the kitchen carrying them.

Ryan had a bit of difficulty getting his key into the lock, but he managed it. He didn't want to drop either the milk, the flowers, or the large box, and juggling them while he turned the key to open the door wasn't easy. He sighed as the door swung open, feeling victorious.

The sight that met his gaze almost made him drop everything he was carrying, his eyes widening in surprise. In the less than half and hour since he'd been gone, their living room had been transformed into what looked like a hothouse.

There were flowers everywhere -- roses, gardenias, tulips. The apartment was redolent with the heady floral scent; it almost made Ryan feel giddy. He closed his eyes, breathing in the perfumed air, knowing that Greg must have rushed to set this up.

"Hey!" Greg came into the living room from the kitchen, looking surprised to see Ryan back so soon. "I didn't think you'd get back this quick --" He broke off with a smile as he saw the box and the bouquet of flowers in Ryan's hands. "Looks like we both had the same idea."

"I think so." Ryan couldn't hold back a smile as he set the gallon of milk and the box of chocolates down on the the table by the door and held out the bouquet of roses to Greg. "Happy Valentine's Day, baby. I wanted to give you these because I know you love roses."

"They're beautiful, Ry." Greg took the flowers, burying his nose in them and inhaling their scent. Carefully, he laid them down on the coffee table in front of the couch, then moved into Ryan's arms to wrap his own arms around his boyfriend's waist.

"Our first Valentine's Day together," he said softly, his voice husky with emotion. "I wanted it to be special, so I ordered all these flowers. The van just pulled out of the parking lot about five minutes before you got back. I expected you to be gone longer."

"I thought I'd be longer, too, but the florist's were prepared for the day," Ryan said with a laugh. "What did you do, call for these the second I was out of the door? Greg, they're incredible." He looked around, amazed by the proliferation of flowers.

"Yeah, I called as soon as you'd left. I set all of this up days ago," Greg told him with a grin. "I've been thinking about the look on your face when you saw them for the past week. I wish I'd had a camera in my hand to snap a photo of your face when you first saw them."

"I shouldn't have been so surprised," Ryan told him with a laugh, shaking his head. "I know how romantic you can be. I should have known you'd do something like this for Valentine's Day." He rested his forehead against Greg's, his words soft and loving. "Thank you, sweetheart."

"Nothing to thank me for," Greg murmured, obviously touched by Ryan's words. "I wanted to do something special for you, Ry. This is our first Valentine's Day together, and I wanted ti to be special. What's more special than a room full of flowers?"

"I've got an answer for that," Ryan told him, a smile curving his lips. He ran a hand down Greg's back to cup his ass, pulling his boyfriend closer against his own body. "Making love in a room full of flowers. And eating chocolates afterwards," he added, nodding towards the box.

Greg's dark eyes widened when he saw the box, the look on his face just as surprised as Ryan was sure his own had been when he'd walked in the door. "Wow! It'll take us a month to eat all those!" The smile he turned on Ryan was so bright it was almost blinding. "You know what I like, don't you?"

"I know other things you like, too," Ryan said softly, sliding his hands under Greg's shirt and up his back. Greg moaned softly as he leaned against Ryan, resting his head on his boyfriend's shoulder, his arms tightening around Ryan's slender waist.

"Wait until you see the bedroom," Greg told him, laughing softly as he pulled away from Ryan and took his hand. "Come on, you'll like this." He moved towards the hallway, and Ryan followed him, wondering what else Greg had done to make this day special.

His eyes widened when Greg led him to the bedroom door and he looked inside; the scent of flowers was permeating this room, too, and he could see why. Greg had scattered rose and gardenia petals over their bed, as well as putting bouquets on the dresser and bedside table.

"Baby, this is fantastic," he whispered, wrapping his arms around Greg's waist from behind. "I've never made love in a field of flowers, but that's what this is going to feel like. If we close our eyes, we'll be able to pretend we're out in a flowery field full of sunshine."

"That sounds like a plan to me," Greg murmured, leaning back against him. "I want to spend all day in here with you. Just lock the rest of the world away and forget we have any responsibilities outside of loving each other. For the day, at least."

"I think it'll be the perfect way to spend Valentine's Day," Ryan answered, his voice soft and breathless as he and Greg moved towards the bed as one, both of them starting to shed their clothes as they went, not caring if fabric ripped and buttons popped off.

The two of them fell onto the bed on top of the rose and gardenia petals, releasing a cloud of heavenly scent all around them. Ryan barely noticed the flower petals that stuck to their bodies; he was too busy kissing Greg, enfolding his lover in his arms.

This had been the best Valentine's Day he'd ever had in his life, Ryan thought as he rolled over with Greg under him, the two of them locked in a passionate embrace. And from this moment on, as far as he could tell it was only going to get even better as they went along.
