Unbelievable. When I first met Gil Grissom, I had already heard about his fascination with insects. He was a world renowned entomologist after all, so I wasn’t surprised. But if I hadn’t known of his love of the creepy crawlies, stepping one foot in his office would have been the only clue I needed. There were insects everywhere. They were in specimen jars, on shelves, on the wall, books about insects, journals about the new breakthroughs in entomology. Everywhere you looked there was something about an insect.

Initially, although it didn’t surprise me, it did kinda freak me out. I had never met anyone so crazy about bugs. I mean, really; who has? But eventually, Gil’s fascination and never ending quest for knowledge about these creatures intrigued me. Gil would get this incredibly adorable expression on his face just before he was about to impart some unknown fact about insects to me. So it became a routine of mine, I would ask him a question, whether I knew the answer or not, just so I could see that look.

The same look that is currently plastered on our 4-month old daughter’s face. Erica, who has been crying almost non-stop for the last 2 hours, is currently curled up on Gil’s chest watching a ladybug documentary. Gil suggested letting her watch TV to see if it would calm her down. At that point we were willing to try anything, but just in case it actually worked, we figured it should be something educational. Gil had TIVO’d a documentary on ladybugs he didn’t want to miss, so we decided to watch that. Little did we know that it would actually work.

“Unbelievable.”

“What?” asked Gil, from his prone position on the sofa.

“I said this is unbelievable. We have tried everything imaginable in the last 2 hours to get her to stop crying. I sang, rocked, walked, talked, danced, made a fool of my self all for nothing. You get her, lay down on the couch to watch a documentary and all’s quiet.”

“Are you mad Ricky?” Gil asked with a smug expression on his face.

“No,” I answer, pouting.

“Come here,” Gil said as he sits up to allow me to maneuver into a lounging position behind him. Settling back onto my chest, Gil cradles Erica, who is now fast asleep, in his arms. “It’s okay. Maybe she’ll want to take up piano lessons when she grows up.”

“I’m not jealous.”

“I know,” replies Gil, turning his attentions back to documentary.

Looking down at my lover and daughter, I can’t help but to smile. Maybe Erica will be the world’s first piano playing entomologist. With that final thought I join my partner in watching the ladybug documentary.

THE END
