Nick awakened slowly, wondering what had jolted him out of a sound sleep. It only took a few seconds for him to realize that Greg's slim body was pressed against his own, his boyfriend's hand moving over his bare chest, as though exploring his skin.

When Nick opened his eyes, Greg stopped touching him, raising his head and moving his hand away quickly, like a small child who had been caught opening the cookie jar. Nick laughed when their eyes met, shaking his head and covering Greg's hand with his own.

"You don't have to stop touching me just because I woke up, baby," he said softly, feeling his heart start to thump. "And you don't have to only touch me when I don't know what you're doing. You can touch me any time, Greg. I'm not going to jump on you if you do."

Greg nodded slowly, closing his eyes and resting his head on Nick's chest. "I know that, Nicky. I just .... I feel kind of torn. Part of me wants to be closer to you than we've already been, but another part of me is scared to do anything."

Nick nodded, his heart going out to Greg. After what he had been through at Shane's hands, Nick wasn't surprised that he was scared; he hadn't thought that Greg would make the first move towards him like this, and he was encouraged by it.

"Whatever you want to do, then it's okay with me," he said softly, raising a hand to stroke Greg's hair. "If you just want to touch me -- or if you want me to touch you. Whatever you're comfortable with, Greggo." His voice was slightly breathless, the words tumbling out.

"I-I want you to make love to me," Greg blurted out, looking down as he said the words. "I want us to be together, Nicky. I'm tired of waiting, and I know you are, too. It's past time we got physical with each other. I don't want to let what he did to me run my life."

"Greg, are you sure?" Nick couldn't believe what he was hearing; it didn't seem possible that Greg could already have made the leap across a chasm that Nick knew had to seem wide and frightening. "If you're just doing this for me, babe, don't. I want you to be ready."

But Greg shook his head, his gaze earnest as he looked at Nick. "No, I'm not just doing this for you, Nicky," he whispered, his voice gaining strength as he spoke. "I'm doing it for me, too. This is what I want. I want to be with you. In every way."

"You can be, Greg," Nick told him, sitting up and pulling Greg into his arms. "I just want to be sure that you're not rushing into this because you feel like you owe it to me, or some ridiculous idea like that. I want you to take your time and be sure this is right for you."

Why was he trying to dissuade Greg from what the younger man obviously wanted to do? Nick asked himself. He'd waited a long time for this, longer than Greg knew. He had wanted Greg since the day they'd met; this was the culmination of what felt like a lifetime of desire.

Now that things were finally starting to heat up between them, he couldn't be so stupid as to push Greg away, or to caution him about this possibly not being the right time for them to consummate their feelings for each other. He must be out of his mind.

But he couldn't let Greg do anything on the spur of the moment that might damage his healing process. It was still awfully soon after what Shane had done to him; he wasn't entirely sure that Greg was ready to jump into the physical side of their relationship quite yet.

Still, if Greg was sure about this, then refusing to go along with what he wanted to do could very likely damage him further -- and it could hurt the future of their relationship. That was the last thing Nick wanted to do; he didn't want Greg to feel rejected.

And he definitely didn't want to make the young man hold back, not if Greg felt that he was ready to take their physical relationship to the next level. But he was going to let Greg be the one to initiate things, to take it all at his own pace. Greg would be the one in control.

That was the most important thing, that Greg felt he was in control of the situation. After all that Shane had done to undermine his self-confidence, Nick was determined to restore that to his boyfriend, to bring back the Greg he'd known before the advent of Shane in his life.

Now that their relationship was finally starting to heat up, Nick didn't want to hold back, not unless it was Greg who decided that things were moving too fast. Above all else, he wanted his boyfriend to be completely comfortable with everything they did.

Greg sat up and looked down at him; Nick could feel a shiver run down his spine when he saw the desire in Greg's eyes. This man wanted him; there could be no mistaking the look in those dark depths. Yes, Greg was ready for this. He couldn't look like that if he wasn't.

"I want to be on top of you," Greg whispered, his voice steady, though Nick could sense a hesitation there behind the words. "I want to -- to ride you." He looked away from Nick, a pink blush rising in his cheeks, as though the admission of what he wanted to do embarrassed him.

"I'd love that," Nick answered, reaching out to take one of Greg's hands in his own and twine their fingers together. "I want you to do whatever feels right to you, Greg. Whatever you need from me, I'll give it to you. This is about you more than me, baby."

To his surprise, Greg shook his head, his tone firm when he spoke again. "No, Nicky. This is about both of us. It's about us both getting what we want -- and what we need. It's about your pleasure as much as mine. It's about us becoming one."

Now it was Nick's turn to nod; he could feel tears rising behind his eyes. He hadn't expected this kind of move from Greg; he hadn't thought that his boyfriend could be so brave after he'd been treated so horribly by someone who claimed to care about him.

But Greg was an extraordinary human being, he told himself, squeezing the younger man's hand. Greg wasn't the kind of person to back down from any situation, or to let himself be controlled by his fears. He would face them head-on, and try his best to defeat them.

And he was lucky enough to be given the chance to be the person who took Greg's hand and helped him past those fears. He was the man who Greg had chosen to be with, to give him body and heart to, the man who Greg wanted to have by his side.

Nick reached for the table by the bed where the lube was kept, knowing that they were going to need a lot of it if Greg truly intended for them to be intimate. He was going to make this the best experience that Greg could possibly have, no matter what he had to do.

Things were starting to heat up, and Nick couldn't find it in his heart to hold back. This was what he had wanted for longer than he could remember -- and now that Greg wanted it too, he had the feeling that all of his most cherished dreams were on the verge of coming true.
