Sara sat starring out the window.
“Sara?” Catherine asked, slightly annoyed.
“Sara!”
“Sorry, what?” Sara’s eyes snapped to Catherine.
“What’s with you tonight? Sara, is anything wrong?” It was almost cute when Catherine pretended she cared. “And don’t say it’s lack of sleep, because god knows you don’t get any normally.”
Greg raised an eyebrow at her and Catherine caught it, adding, “Because you’re here so often.”
“Someone must've put decaf in the wrong pot.”
Catherine looked at Greg. “There’s a job for you. Go. Coffee.”
Greg left in a hurry.
Smart boy.
“Sara, really now, what’s wrong?” Now Catherine sounded concerned.
Sara didn’t believe it though.
“What do you care?”
“You know I care Sara.”
“No I don’t.”
“I’ve told you Sara.”
“You told me you loved me.”
“Now is not the time Sara.” Catherine turned around rolling her eyes and biting her tongue.
Sara looked out the window.
She really should have drunken all the booze before she came to work.
Well really she did.
She drank that all last night.
But she hadn’t slept since then.
So she wasn’t really sure.
She was still floating high enough to think she had been killed on the way home though.
Sara had never been good with break ups.
But she liked to think she was stronger than this.
Opening her home and her bed to Catherine had been hard.
Opening her heart had been damn near impossible.
But she had.
She had given Catherine everything before she left.
But people move on.
Sara knew that.
And Sara was determined to know that Catherine wasn’t the reason she was drinking.
She’d rather be fucked up than fucked up and pathetic.
She’d had more practice at the former.
“It is sleep Cath, really, I am sorry I just didn’t get to sleep last night.” Catherine knew she was lying.
And Sara knew she knew that too.
But whatever it takes.
And Sara knew what it took.
“I’m not going to screw up Cath. It’s okay. I haven’t had any coffee today. Greg’s getting some. Yes? I’ll go have some, get tonight over with and tomorrow I’ll be back on top of my game. We all have bad days.”
“Okay then.” Catherine knew Sara had been drinking.
And she blamed herself even though she knew Sara wouldn’t admit it was because of her.
She just couldn’t bring herself to care anymore.
“Goodbye.”
