A/N: I was going to try and write something angsty, but my muse had a different idea, and who am I to argue?***
This would be Cath's fifth birthday since I'd arrived in Las Vegas, and our third together. It didn't seem possible, nearly three years together already, and still a secret from everyone at work. Investigators, ha!
We'd evolved a game, we played it each way, that we didn't give each other presents at work. People commented of course, but the first year we were together it would have seemed odd since we'd not done it the previous two years, and we didn't want to change, just in case. Last year Cath thought I'd really forgotten until Lindsay gave her my present after she'd left school. The look on her face was priceless, especially when she realised that Lindsay would keep secrets from her mum for me!
This year I was gearing up all my courage. We'd arranged to go out for a romantic dinner together, and I was going to ask her to sort out a gay marriage, back in California if we had to, but anywhere we could. I'd bought the ring, booked the table, and thought it would be perfect. I'd also told Cath that I was taking her out for dinner, so she didn't do anything else for us, unlike my first birthday, we both booked tables at the same restaurant, which caused some confusion when we turned up. But we had a good laugh and a great time.
Off we went for dinner, Cath dressed in a gorgeous dress, shimmering silk that brought out her eyes beautifully. I was quite happy in a little black number, letting her shine, and letting her play with my bare legs whenever she felt like it.
I was gathering my courage, about to get down on one knee when Cath slipped off to the bathroom to powder her nose. I slumped back, knowing I would have to gird my loins once more, so didn't notice her coming back until she coughed.
I looked around, there she was on one knee, with a ring in her hands, held out towards me. "Marry me?" she asked.***
